  1. Im looking to replace my Sony DRU500AX burner with an external drive.

    Can anyone give me some info on what to avoid/look for?

    why not just put it in a external firewire case ...

    but pioneer and plextor make good units ...

    Yeah, i could put it in an external firewire case, but then i will still have the Sony DRU500AX....

  4. I'd get a USB 2.0 external case myself since more computers has USB 2.0 then firewire. Then put a NEC or Nutech 8x in it. Total cost with case should be under $150.

    If you want to put a regular DVD drive in an external case, do yourself a favor and get a combo Firewire/USB2 case. USB2 doesn't always work properly, Firewire almost always does. Firewire cards are cheap. This gives you more options and installing a DVD in a external case is easy and usually cheaper than a dedicated USB/Firewire DVD drive. If you don't like your present drive, check the DVD writers to the left. I personally like Pioneer.

    do yourself a favor and get a combo Firewire/USB2 case
    AMEN, I have a drive in a combo case and < 50% of the machines I have tried it with USB 2.0 have not worked, but all the firewire machines have worked fine.
