  1. HELLO ALL, AND THANX FOR SUCH A GREAT FORUM. I DO ALOT OF VHS TO DVD CONVERSION. FOR SELF AND BUSINESS. WELL RECENTLY I WAS ASKED TO TAKE AN ASSORTMENT OF OLD CONCERTS AND PUT THEM TO DVD FOR A LOCAL BAND. THE FOOTAGE VARIES FROM BAD TO PRETTY GOOD.

I DO THIS NORMALLY BY MY AVERTV STEREO CAPTURE CARD AND CAP IN DVD RES (720X480) OR HALF RES..I THEN ENCODE WITH TMPGENC AND I ALSO USE THAT TO SIMPLE COLOR CORRECT AND DE NOISE.

WELL I PURCHASED PREMIERE PRO IN HOPES THAT I COULD MAKE MY MONEY BACK CONVERTING THIS LARGE LIBRARY OF SHOWS INTO CHAPTERED DVDS(BULK OF MY BUSINESS) WITH DOLBY 5.1 AND ADVANCED COLOR CORRECTION THEN WITH ENCORE MAKE SOME PRO LOOKING DVDS ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT I WAS DOING WITH ULEAD AND DVDIT.

OK MY CHALLENGE LIES IN MAKING THE VIDEO COMPATIBLE WITH PPRO FOR EASE OF EDITING. I CAPPED A 15 MINUTE SNIPET OF VIDEO USING DVD SPECS 720X480 ETC. OPENED PRO AND IT FROZE WHEN I TRIED TO WORK WITH IT, I ENCODED IT TO MPEG 2 DVD AND ONCE MORE TRIED TO WORK WITH IT AND YES IT WORKED BUT UNTILL I RENDERED (OVER 2 HOURS FOR 15 MINUTE VID!) I COULD NOT PLAY THE SNIPET WELL ON PREVIEW.

IM LOOKING FOR ADVICE AND IVE CONSIDERED PASSING THROUGH A CAM TO GET DV AND THEREBY FORGOING ALL THIS, BUT AT THE MOMENT MY CAM DOESNT ALLOW IT. SO ANY SUGGESTIONS ON A REMEDY ? OR DIFFERENT WAY TO ACHEIVE MY GOALS?

  2. Hard to read your post with the caps lock on

PPro isn't that good at editing MPEG files - I have had terrible problems with that. Best is to capture the video in some uncompressed format or at most say a DV format and edit in PPro in that format. You can then output the corrected video in MPEG2 format for DVD authoring of whatever

I even PPro didn't like MJPEG encoded video files. While they imported okay and you could edit them when output to MPEG the would lose audio sync and so far Adobe hasn't been able to help me

for what you are doing you should return P-Pro and get Ulead or Vegas --

  4. sorry for the caps. well there are things you can do with premiere as far as capturing with an analog card in a format adobe can interpret, i have not investigated this matter though as ive found out my card is not ppro compatible. but that just means i cant use ppro to cap and it wont work hand in hand.

the solution lies in capturing a video in a compatible format. well ive found if i capture an analog source clip in 720x480 mpeg 2 29.97 fps i can then import it to ppro. working with it is tough and can cause crashing. so just render the timeline with no cuts or any kind of editing, then save as dv. voila! it is now dv and can be worked with!

making the color correctioin and dolby 5.1 a very real option for my old analog !

  5. I am trying to do similar things as you. When you say "save as dv. viola!" - how are you doing that in PPro? By exporting to an AVI file? Something else?
