Cap direct to Mpeg - Problem Authouring

I hope this question is in the right place & someone can help !
I have been using a Canopus ADVC-50 to capture from VHS, then convert to mpeg for DVD with CCE2.66, authour with Spruce-up, No problem.
Now i am getting low on HD space i tried capturing directly to mpeg2 in Ulead Mediastudio using the Ulead Mpeg Codec & template for DVD. (PAL)
Problem is that Spruce up will not accept this Mpeg stating errors in the stream.
Ulead DVD movie Factory will accept it but is so Slllooooowwww to Authour !
So how can i Get Spruce up to accept the file or speed up Ulead ?

I think you have to convert the audio to ac3. Spruce up only accepts ac3 audio.
