I am capturing using an ADVC50, but how do I get the resultant file to be opened by Virtual dub for editing/cleaning up/ cropping etc?
Suggestions appreciated.

You need to install a DV codec (check the tools section). Then you'll be able to open either but you'll only be able to use the audio if you're file is Type2 DV.

Panasonic DV Codec is a Type 2, and will let you load DV into VDub.
Its in the Tools section.
There is also a DV-Converter in the Tools section. It converts Type 1 DV to Type 2.
