  1. I tried to convert a 5.0.2 DivX .avi to VCD. Following one of the guides, I stripped the audio in Virtualdub and used TMPGEnc Plus to convert using the wizard (pretty much default settings) but as soon as it starts the conversion I get the error "read error occurred at address 00012F40of module TMPGEnc.exe with 733A3221". The same thing happens wihout removing the audio. I then noticed that the only way to view this .avi is with DivX Player - black screen with EO Video player, RealOne player and WMP 9, although by adjusting the brightness/contrast in WMP I can make out shadows. On Pinnacle Studio 7 and Vegas Video 4 I get an interrupted series of large coloured blocks/lines so my problems are not just related to TMPGEnc.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Yeah, i think this has happened to me, i found out the way to get TMPGEnc to actually convert it, is not to use the wizard, try doing it all manually, like clicking the settings button, if its the same problem as me, you might get an error at the end of the encoding, but the movie will still be MPEG.

Yes, from what I've been able to gather, do not use the wizard in TMPGEnc. Read one of the conversion guides and read about how to properly adjust all the settings.

  4. Thanks for the replies. I think I may actually have a couple of issues rather than one. I have problems with TMPGEnc with many of my coversions and I think I just need to play around with settings as suggested.

However, I think I have a specific problem with a DivX movie that can only be viewed satisfactorily using DivX player. It actually plays with other media players - the sound is ok but the image is very dark. If I try to convert it to VCD I get the same dark image. I've loaded the avi into Vegas Video 4 and tried adjusting the brightness/contrast and the image I get is a single still that lasts the entire length of the movie with the sound playing normally. It's as if the still image is acting as some sort of mask hiding the video image that only DivX Player can remove/see through.

    Anyone experienced similar problems?
