I am trying to back up a bonus disc, having successfully backed up the main feature using DVD Shrink. However, DVD Shrink says it has encountered an error and won't read the disc. So I thought I would try Roxio and do a straight copy as its only 3.7 GB. However, Roxio says its protected. I have scanned the disc with ClonyXXL and get zero skulls (no protection)! Are there now DVD's on the market we cannot make a backup of? I have browsed the guides but cannot find anything relating to this. Thanks in advance.

Some extra DVD's install software on your computer to prevent you from copying them (Autorun is baaaad, m'kay). Try anydvd (on the fly DeCSS and Region free). Also try holding the shift key when inserting the disk. You may need to uninstall whatever go installed.

Even better download dvd decryptor and do it with 1 app to rip and burn and the program is free!!

I used AnyDVD in conjunction with DVD Shrink and this seemed to work. The DVD was both read and written successfully. Upon playback the disc was just like the original and performed ok. However, after playing the disc about 5 times the DVD became pixelated and the video fell behind the soundtrack by about 10 seconds! This is a problem I have previously experienced with AnyDVD. I like the usability of DVD Shrink as opposed to having to create an ISO file with DVD Decrypter (which also has no preview or percentage indicator for compression). As I did play the DVD on my pc before backing up, is there any way I can delete something from registry to back it up again without having to use AnyDVD? Is it possible that the disc has some soft of 'fade' technology like some pc games now have? I ask this as the first 4/5 times I played the disc it performed perfectly. Thanks in advance.

razza_273,
With dvd decrypter, you can rip the vob files from the dvd.
When you open the program, select Mode > File F.
In the right hand window you will see all the vob files. Save
those files to your hard drive. Open them in dvd shrink. If the file
is < 4.37 gig, you will not need to compress it.
I do not use dvd decrypter to burn the dvd, I burn directly from
dvd shring 3.1.5.
BTW, make sure that you go into the Tools menu before ripping. Under File Mode, make sure all the Remove boxes are checked. Under CSS make sure that everything is properly set up there.
Hope this helps. -
Whats up with the new dvd shrink? I can use the others just fine, but when I try using anything above the 3.0 beta, I keep getting a copy protection error and it wont rip the dvd..I would guess if it was a real copy protection error, the other versions would catch it as well, would it not? Any help greatly appreciated.

Tried that and it doesn't work. I've even tried uninstall/reinstall. I think the program worked 1 time a few weeks back when I first downloaded it. Then after trying a second movie and beyond I get the error. A bit weird?

Are you ripping the DVD to your HD first with DVD Decrypter, or having Shrink rip the disc? DO NOT rip with shrink, it has problems.

I have never had any version of DVDShrink give me any error related to a copy protected disc. DVDDecrypter is the way to go however to get rid of such a problem. I'd use file mode - select all - then place that into a folder on my HD....then open with DVDShrink.
