I am getting ready to purchase the nec burner after all of the comments from the in the dvd writer section it seem many of you seem satisfied with this drive. I found it online for $98 with free shipping. Anyonw would like to give a final comment. Also I was wondering if this drive is media picking. Let me know.

As I have stated in a previous reply , I have a nec 2500 and I believe that the nec is a good writer. However the greatness of this writer doesnt come to its full rights when the company itself (nec) has limited this recorder to specific brands of discs, if you follow necs compatibility list and you can get a hold of those specific disc where you live there´s no problem, but if you´re some times tempted to buy some cheaper media like bulkpaq 4x you have to settle to burn these discs at 2,4x and considering when you´re buying a 8x writer you shouldn´t settle for anything less than 4x.
And when 8x writers like plextors pioneer and lite on I believe have been able to write 8x on 4x discs where nec 2500 (only) have been able to write 4x raises a question mark.
The nec 2500 has even failed to support some discs labeled as 8x so I have some small regrets that I went for the nec 2500.
But I believe that in a near future there will be a firmware that will support all the discs that all the other writers support , even if nec themselves wont publish it I emailed them only two days ago And I didn´t get a real answer to my question if they will upgrade the firmware or not.
But back to your question , yes I believe that the nec 2500 is a good writer maybe the best of them all with the right firmware, and its a bargain but the present official firmware stinks ,but if you buy the media that nec tells you to there´s no problem. But I am of the distinction that you should buy the media that you want and not what the manufacturer of your dvdwriter tells you. I apologize for my bad english but I am from sweden. -
The reviews don't lie, this drive is awesome. It burns on media that make plextor and liteon's choke. I've burned memorex, maxell, TDK, ritek, CMC and even some princos that a friend gave me because he couldn't burn them. Well, my 2500a burned them and they play fine on my player. You will not be sorry if you buy this drive.

Its a great burner, I'm glad I bought it. As for it only burning 4x, I'm not sure what that guy above is talking about. It burns 4x verbatim datalifeplus(MCC) dvd-r and 4x fuji(tayo-yuden) dvd-r at 8x. It also burns 4x ricoh dvd+rs(memorex, tdk, maxell) and I'm sure future firmware upgrades will increase compatiblity.

I mean that the nec 2500 is a great writer , no I dont mean that the nec 2500 is a 4x writer , I mean that where other writers like plextor pioneer have been able to write 8x on discs labeled 4x, where the nec couldn´t write to more than 4x.
yes it can write to some 4x medias at a higher speed for example discs with ricoh media code tayo yuden etc , but on the other hand if you buy for example bulkpaq dvdr+ generation 4 4x , you can only burn to them at 2,4 x and that is bad.
but overall Iam satisfied with the writer. A better firmware with support to more discs than today it would be a superb writer .
