  1. I shall be getting a new system over the next couple of weeks.

Which out of the following would be best for video editing?

    Pentium 4 (2.6ghz)
    ATX DDR motherboard
256 MB PC 2100 DDR RAM
    80GB 7200rpm HD.

    54x CD ROM
    128meg GEforce 2 MX 400 tv out
    128bit Sound card

    Or....

    AMD athlon3000+XP

    atxddr 400 motherboard
    512 mb ddr ram
    120 Gb 7200HD
    256mb ddr tv out graphics
    128bit 3d stereo sound
    54x cd rom.

Amd is a bit more expensive, would it be much quicker than the pentium are they both up tp the job of Video work?

    Thanks.

Neither. Not enough RAM, only a single hard drive, no capture hardware, no DVD Burner, old graphics card.

About the CPU, most apps are optimized for Intel P4s with HyperThreading.

You might want to make sure the video cards are capable of capture, and also addd some kind of burner ........... but either system is capable as far as horsepower.

I am on a strict budget so trying to get the best system at a budget price.

The above system falls within my budget

  7. Without being snoopy, what sort of editing do you plan to do ?

backing up your own dvds is one thing - capturing and burning camcorder tapes or tv proggies is another and can tax your computer resources in different ways...

  8. Will be used mainly for capture/editing DV camcorder tapes.

Will almost certainly be going for the athlon 3000+. 1GB ddr ram, 160Gb hard drive, geforce 4 fx5200 system.

This prob be upgraded with a second 40GB H/D and my pioneer dvdw.

    Is it up to it?

    Should get you going.

Understanding your budgets restraints, try to get the largest 2nd hard drive you can when you later upgrade. Last year I replaced my OEM 80 gig drive with two 160 gig drives... didn't take me but a few months before I was again watching my free space.. video data, particularly DV-AVI, really eats space up.

Hopefully your camcorder will have a direct firewire setup. If not, pay particular attention as to your selected hardware/software choices for capturing. Some of the inexpensive PCI cards can give fits with a/v sync loss.
Anyhow, pick up a cuppla rw disks for your burner to get thru the experimenting/learning curve to avoid coasters.. and enjoy.

    Good luck.

  10. Camcorder has firewire and analogue in and out.

Will initially be using pinnacle studio 9 for capture/edit...not sure what i will use for burning disc, had no joy with studio 9 up to now

    Thanks for your advice.
