Howdy All,
I'm trying the trial version of this product and I found the capture quality to be pretty much as good as watching it directly from the DV camcorder so it seems as though the capture does a good enough job for my liking. I'm wondering if the full blown V.7 has more effects etc. than the trial version has?? I've tried Sonic MyDvd and although pretty easy to use, it doesn't have much in the editing department. Video Studio has a fairly nice set of effects/transitions, but I havn't seen anything that compares to the cheap ShowBiz software I got with my Sony DRU510A bundle. It would have effects that would allow you to say have you video playing through a drive in type overlay or baseball field scoreboard or lots of cool things like that as well as all the neat transitions etc. The problem is I couldn't make the piece of crap work so I abandoned it after quite a few hours of playing. Does anyone know of a video editor that has those kind of choices for editing?? Ulead is pretty good, but doesn't have as cool a stuff as that cheap old ShowBiz had. I'm still testing and poking around for something I feel is the best to buy.
Thanks,
Max

Sorry you were disappointed. The stripped-down triaware does not have the over 100 transitions and effects. Neither does it come with Cool 3D like the full commercial version does. I wish you success with whatever program you end up with.
Hello. -
If you decide to go for VideoStudio 7.0, have a look at my step-by-step Web tutorials.
1. How to capture:

2. How to author a DVD:

Yes - the trial version features fewer transitions than does the FULL purchased version.

Just to let you know that I'm not disappointed in the VS7 and can upgrade from my VS4SE for under $50 so I think that would be good value. I was just interested in finding out whether the full blown version has more effects etc than the trial version. Another question I have is, can I capture MPEG2 directly using VS7 from my Sony DCR-PC9 DV camcorder through Fire Wire to save rendering time? or do all capture formats bring it in in AVI? I'm pretty sure that my camcorder format is MPEG so it seems like a waste of time to capture in AVI and then render back to MPEG when the format is origionally in MPEG or am I barking up the wrong tree on this one?? Still learning the ropes on this stuff. Specialist I already used your step by step guide to make my first DVD and it worked out just fine. I even downloaded the MPEG tutorials from Ulead website and they were helpful as well, but without your guide I would have had trouble making the actual DVD as I made 1 coaster before following your guide to a "T" and then the result was very good.
Thanks Again,

If you can upgrade for such a cheap price, DO IT !
The full version features lots and lots of more transitions, and also some bug fixes.
I think that the only drawbacks of VS7 are the inability to normalize the audio and convert it to AC3, and also it's bad it doesn't create separate streams for authoring. So, I do it in external tools.
While we're at it - let me get the chance considering Tommy Knocker and Jerry are here- let me talk very quickly about an issue I have just written as a new topic;
I captured an 100 min AVI file from VHS, aplied a brightness filter and created a final file KEEPING THE AUDIO WAVE FORMAT.
Got terrible desync problem, as I ain't used to AVI files (99% I do real time with no sync problems), I wonder..why ? Should I had also created the audio file as MPEG ? Should I had encoded just the video stream ? If so, muxing the original wave audio on the authoring step shouldn't cause desync as well - actually, I made it by trashing the bad audio and recovering the original wave one from the AVI file ?
Stiil, returning to the goal of the topic writer, I DO recomend VS, easy to use and powerful;
Thanks,

I have tried numerous apps and always come back to VideoStudio 7. I bought a combined Special Edition of VideoStudio 7, MovieFactory 2, and Ulead DVD player for $12 with shipping on ebay! What a deal! It has everything. It edits without rerendering mpeg2 files. It captures mpeg2. I rerendered a 90 minute movie at 720x480 and 6000 variable bitrate and it was only 3gb in size! Burns perfect to DVD. Good menus. One of the best editing interfaces available. And stable. Several other apps crash from time to time but VS is great. Oh, I also own VideoStudio 6 SE DVD (bought it on ebay for $15 about a year ago). It is one of the only apps that can edit mpeg well and output xsvcd without rerendering.
Every once in a while I will hear about another app and I will go try it, but I always come back to Ulead. Great job Ulead.
Good luck with your search. Oh, and definately try the full version. The trial is a little unstable. Oh and let me warn you. If your mpeg has dropped frames and VS does not rerender before writting to DVD, the audio will be out of sync. In that case, let it rerender and it will sync up perfectly.
