  1. A friend of mine ( Honest, it wasn't me ) wants me to burn a WMV file that he created to a VCD, but I'm having trouble converting the file to an MPEG1.

I can open the file in TMPGEnc fine, and it starts to encode, but when it hits 67% it freezes. I've tried this several times, and it locks up at the same percentage, and even the same exact frame every time.

I even paid $20 and downloaded DirectConvert but even it freezes up, I'm assuming at the same spot.

The file plays fine all the way through in Win Media Player, I just need it in another format to burn it to a disc.

Could this file just have a bad frame? If I snip out that spot, will I be able to convert it?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Try fixing it with ASFTools.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I did run it through ASF-AVI-RM-WMV Repair, and got the same results.

Yes, but you still haven't tried ASFTools.

Well I have now, with the same results.

I have also opened this file in Windows Movie Maker and tried to re-save it, but it processes the file and seems to get almost two-thirds of the way through, then hangs.

I'm starting to think we're running out of options here.

I've had pretty good luck with Canopus Procoder when converting windows media. You might not want to go through the trouble of downloading the trial version but I thought I'd throw it out there. Sorry things didn't work out.

Another thing I tried once was creating a fake avi with VFAPI Converter in conjunction with a TMPGEnc project file and then opening up the fake avi with Virtualdub. You might be able to delete the section that is causing the crashes this way. I ended up re-encoding to Divx and then converting it to VCD mpeg. Surprisingly I didn't lose much quality from the original wmv. This whole process probably sounds like a pain in the ass but it worked for me. Then again I like doing things the hard way sometimes. Gives me a greater sense of accomplishment I guess. :P
