WinXP and SP1, is it worth?

Is it worth to install SP1 for WinXP? I read somewhere that installing SP1 significantly slow the performance of the computer. Is it true?

Yeah, vanilla XP is just asking for troubles. SP1 is what pretty much makes it into a decent OS. XP is always a resource whore though, you need a little extra RAM to compensate and you can always disable a lot of the resource-hogging niceties that go along with XP. TweakUI isn't packaged with Windows anymore so you have to go to the official XP website to download it. That should give you a little more control over some of those sweets.

I don't know, I,ve been running XP Pro for over a year now with no updates. It runs perfectly with no troubles whatsoever. I do have it streamed down a bit with minimum processes runing.

To each his own. I don't plan on updating.

It would be tough for hackers to get into my XP, it's not connected to the web. Good luck to anyone trying to use my PC for a server, it's on dail-up.

Though you should. There are several viruses you can get if not properly updated. Some of which do NOT require you to do much of anything except be online.

I've NEVER seen a performance problem with SP1, matter of fact the only problems I've seen have been with people with hopelessly jacked up yet still running system who installed it thinking "This will fix it!"

Sp1 is well worth it, and sp2 is on its way soon.

That's my point, my XP is never online. I dual-boot my PC with 98se/XP. XP is used 90% of the time for all my Apps. 98se is used to go online. 98se can't see XP or any of my HDDs or partitions because they are NTFS. If I contract a virus, it will infect 98se only. In witch case I can restore it in 7 min flat with a Ghost image on a DVD+RW. I have no important data on my 98 partition, so I don't care less about it.

Like I said, my XP purrs like a kitten without the SP1. No need to upgrade in my situation thank you.

Win2K died on me one day, the easy fix was to update to XP Pro. I did the SP1 same day, works fine.

On Some machines windows XP SP1 can slow you wayyy down but there a fix for it, search for

Q815411_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe

That will fix ney slow down issues, It will be included with SP2 also.

There's a post windows xp sp1 that will slow u to a crawl, i forget the number, dont install it.

Here's a little feature you might want but WON'T HAVE if you don't apply the XP service pack.

48bit LBA support for hard drives.

Drives no larger than 137GB unless you have 48bit LBA support.

I've upgraded to WinXP SP1 without a problem and no performance issues.

Just do it. If any problem, you can uninstall the service pack back to standard WinXP.

ONLY IF YOU HAVE SYSTEM RESTORE ENABLED AND IT WORKS!!!!!!

i have run sp1 since dec 2002 and have not had any problems.
