  1. i have an avi file that is interlaced. it appears to me that when it is de-interlaced the picture loses some of its appearance. here's my question, can i leave it interlaced and have it play as a standard vcd or does it have to be svcd????

VCD does not contain interlacing. You could try your bets with XVCD at 352x480 or 480x480 and see if it works. SVCD will work with interlacing not problems there as long as you get the field order right.

  3. I usually find that using SVCD is better, as you can maintain the temporal information contained in the second field. If you really need to go to VCD, I find it better to drop the second field, rather than try to get any information back from it using a deinterlace filter. I don't like the bluring which occurs in fast motion areas, which you don't get if you just drop the field.
