  1. I have some avi files that I want to send my son who has a MAC. I would like to convert the files to .mov so he can use them in iMovie on his MAC. Is there a free or relatively inexpensive conversion program to do this?

I use RAD Video Tools to go the other way from .mov to .avi and it works well.
I am just learning, so be patient with me and some of the questions I might ask.

Well, there's Canopus Procoder. Only problem is that it's quite far from being inexpensive. On the plus side however, there's a free trial version available. It should do the trick if you only need a temporary solution.

You know what? I almost forgot about MPEG-4 Direct Maker. I think the interface is terrible but it will convert your file to mp4 which will play in Quicktime. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than Canopus too($50 vs. $400).
