How fast is your harddrive?
An AVI capture card requires a fairly fast drive but is more forgiving on the CPU.
For your machine - 'slow CPU' a 'realtime' MJPEG, MPEG card such as Studio DC10+ or for a little more $$$ the Matrox 450eTV , ATI All in Wonder with MPEG2 may work.
I have used the studio DC10 and found it to be satisfactory.
