  1. I am trying to make a DivX with permanent subtitles, since the source is a home movie I made my own subtitles using Subtitle workshop, but now I can’t seem to figure out how to add them to the actual movie. My only experience with permanent subtitles is from DVD backups using Virtualdub and VobSub. Is there a way I could use those two programs to add the subtitles I made to the movie?,

In SubtitleStudio, convert the subs to SubStation Alpha (.ssa) format.
Then encode to DivX using VirtualDub and the subtitler filter.

  3. VobSub does not load the .ssa subtitle file when I select it, is there anything more I should be doing?

No, I didn't mention VobSub, did I? Convert to .ssa (if it's not already),
Then encode to DivX using VirtualDub and the subtitler filter.

  5. Sorry, I just installed the subtitle filter from the virtuldub website, and now the subtitles do appear in the preview window, but I don’t see any option to adjust the position of the subtitles. Is there a way to do that with this filter?

With Subtitler filter, no. However, since you already have VobSub, load the TextSub filter as well, if you haven't done so already. It has options to manipulate subtitle position. Also, Sub Station Alpha can do it as well.
    Hello.

The position is controlled by the script itself:
    Code:
    PlayResY: 576
...tells the rebderer that the screen is 576 px high. Lower this value to make the subs appear higher up.
The same goes for screen width (PlayResX).

  9. Thank you all for the help, using the TextSub filter did the trick, and is quite simple to configure
