  1. Just when I thought I was getting the hang of dvd burning (I've made about a dozen now) I've started getting this error message every time.

I use Ulead Movie Factory 2 SE, and immediately after it says initializing dvd for recording, the drive ejects the dvd, and an error window pops up that says "Generic error from CD/DVD recording software. Please make sure the drive is ready and try again. Error: DVDR-DAO-SPTI-53-02-05-24-00." I've also gotten the same error when trying with a rw disk, but the number it give me is DVD+RW-SPTI-04-02-02-30-05

I tried using Ulead Video Studio, but it gave me the same error after a much longer time. I think it does some rendering that Movie Factory does not. This program often freezes my computer so I don't use it except to capture stills from my videos for jewel case covers.

I've tried different movies, and several different types of disks.

I've gone to the Ulead site and downloaded the 2 patches they have for Movie Factory, but I get the same error.

I've tried changing the recording speed to match the write strategy speed, as suggested on LordSmurf's website (I love that place!)

I use ADS instant dvd, an external bridge, to copy vhs to my hard drive as mpg with an ADS program called capwiz. My burner is a Sony DVD RW DW-U50A. It's in my laptop.

So I'm hoping someone has some ideas for me.

OK.. I have a work around
Will ULEAD MOVIE FACORY output a File/Folder Hierarchical structure?
That is, can you build the DVD VOLUME to the Hard Drive Instead of the DVD SURFACE DIRECTLY?

    If so,
The way to isolate whether the problem is with:
1 The OS and the burner
    2. Ulead and the Burner
    3. Ulead and the OS
is to output the project to hard drive, then using another program entirely
    NERO would by my choice

    BURN the DVD thusly,

AT LEAST YOU OUTTA GET A DIFFERENT ERROR MESSAGE!!!!

OK a searchon this site on Disc At Once(DAO) errors shows another user of the SONY
Burner found that DISABLING DMA mode and setting it to PIO in the device manager fixed a DAO error message similar to your'n

So under the properties of the IDE CHANNEL to which the burner device is attached (not easy to find because windows doesn't actually say what device is attached where in WIN XP, im afraid)you change from ULTRA DMA mode to simple PIO mode..
Hope you don't have to do this though-- as it will decrease slightly the burn speeds you achieve

ALSO PLEASE UPDATE YOUR ASPI LAYER AND TRY AGAIN..the error message you had shows your system is accesing the BURNER without ASPI access.. this could be ok...
but could be the source of the problem ..the correct drivers are here

    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US...aspi_471a2.exe

you should just download them and install them and reboot and retry before you do the other more complex fix I suggested above

Everyone needs to update this file, but it does take someone who knows computers to load it; or simply read very carefully.

  5. Thanks guys. Last night I tried updating the ASPI drivers to no avail. The ulead site suggested also disabling write caching on the disk which I did. Tonight I'll try changing dma to pio and see how she goes. I have that setting in four places. Primary IDE channel, Device 0 and Device 1 and Secondary IDE channdel, Device 0 and Device 1. So I'm going to change all four, and give her a go.

Did you try getting DVDMF to just create the DVD directories and burning with another program like Nero? This is what I do mostly all the time since I usually want to save the directory structure on the HD for reuse later without having to reauthor (burn on a DVD+RW to check, then later to a DVD+R)

It's possible since you have burned ok, that a cleanup might work? CleanDisk & Defrag....Just a thought.

It takes some concentration to actually load the ASPI driver, if one is not 'intimate' with how these files install...Could I suggest opening Notepad, cut & paste the instructions, have the method open as you do it.

Still think trying a cleanup first might work for you -Often XP will state it does not need a defrag...But does.

    Cheers

  9. I tried changing to PIO, and still got the same error. So I encoded them to disk, and tried burning, same error. Then I installed Nero and tried to burn. This is nice software. The error here clearly indicated the media was bad. I thought I had ruled this out, since I had gone through several in the 2 new packages and they all failed, where I had used the exact same brand, Memorex, before with no failures.

These are expensive disks, since I'm learning, I thought packs of 6 R/W disks would be the best way to go until I learn what works. But I've only had 2 successes out of 8 attempts. I thought I'd be able to reformat R/W but I guess when it's bad, it's bad, it doesn't matter if it's R/W or not.

I changed back to DMA by the way.

I greatly appreciate the help. Thank you all.

Btw, here's the error log from Nero for those who are interested:

you should be able to..just look on the menu in nero for a format
r/w and do it using the full erase (takes just as long as writing a 1mb file and finalizing would)

    and MEMOREX aint the best
try tdk's or even comp usa's own 1x with that sony

Look at this from EMI TEC site (a DVD blank maker)
EMTEC DVDs always completely fulfill the technical standards and quality demands of the DVD Forum resp. The DVD + Alliance. Despite this, caused by the ongoing development mentioned before, is it possible that the very latest stage of development cannot yet be handeled by the DVD writer, because the relevant Data for aligning correctly is not yet in the firmware. Simply said, your DVD writer got no Idea how to write on this specific DVD. As a result, there may be write failures or the disk is not even accepted (illegal media).

    How to cure compatibility problems
Compatibility problems can easily be cured by a firmware update of the DVD writer. This way, the writer "learns" your writer how to handle new, yet unknown media. Due to this, manufacturers of DVD writers release firmware updates on their homepages in regular intervals, containing more media.
