  1. I've found tons of guides/articles about how to rip DVDs to MPEG, to TMPEnc, to Divx, etc. What I want to do is just create a simple, normal, avi file to use in pinnacle studio.

my end result is I'm working on a project and would like to take short clips from DVDs and incorporate them into my own footage/video.

that being said, pinnacle is real picky about what formats it will work with (ie doesn't play well with Divx or MPEG files combined with DV footage)

i've tried using virtualdubmod to extract avi files from VOB files, but the sound doesn't come through. what i'm doing now is using DVDdecrypter to select the chapters I want, autogk to convert to divx, virtualdub to save as type I avi, converting to type II with DV converter, and then importing into studio. is there a simpler (ie one or two programs) way of doing this without multiple format conversions?

    Use VirtualDub-MPEG2.

Under video, select Full Processing and under compression, choose Full frames (Uncompressed).

For audio you have 3 options - you can Save as WAV and remux in studeio or you can set audio to Direct Stream Copy or you can set audio to Full Processing and under compression choose PCM.

You will need a fair bit of hard drive space but this will not put any codecs on at all.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm guessing you want DV format since that it probably the AVI format your own footage is in if you are using PINNACLE to edit.

I don't work with DV AVI mostly HuffyUV or MJPEG but I think you can run the DVD through DVD2AVI to get a D2V project file then load that project file into VirtualDub via an AviSynth AVS script then save it out to any AVI format you like including a DV codec.

  7. I seem to have a problem with this solution. I rip my DVD with DVD Decrypter fine to get the VOBs. The I set the compression in VirtualDub-MPEG2 to uncompressed, then file, save as AVI. The file plays fine and looks fine, but Adobe Premiere 6.5 says it is an unsupported format. The same happens when I try to compress with Huffuv. Any help? Thanks.

  9. So Premiere 6.5 won't do Type I DV Stream?

  10. I tried to convert it. It says it isn't type 1, so I'm assuming it is type 2.

Pinnacle Studio support only one type and that is Type 2.
