  1. After recording a DVD+r or +RW disk with the liteOn, I often want to make copies of with my DVD+R writer on my pc. This has been a little tricky. So far the only tool that works for me is DVD Decrypter in ISO mode - it makes exact copies.
All the software that works with commercial DVD's: CloneDVD, DVDShrink etc. will not work with my disks from the LiteOn.
If I try to copy in IFO mode, I get read errors like illegal command. IF I try to copy the files & folders with software or Explorer, I get a DVD that looks okay in Windows but won't autoplay in any DVD players.
What is your experience with this? DVD decrypter has its limits so I'd like to know if there are other ways. Preferably without having to re-author, I just want to copy.

  3. I have tried TMPGEnc DVD Author and Showbiz Authoring software. I was able to re-encode with Showbiz but it took hours. TMPGenc often will not import the .vob files from the recorded DVD, probably because of read errors. Using a LiteOn DVD rom drive reduces the number of read error problems, but doesn't complete eliminate them.
I have found the +VR disks very compatible with various DVD players in regard to playback, so I'm not too unhappy with the recorder so far. The author of DVDDecrypter seems supportive of improving that software for use with +VR format, so hats off to him.

Don't listen to PhilipL. He is promoter of Pioneer and DVD-R/RW format. He didn't record a single +R or +RW disks in his life. He is bitching about +R/RW format on different forums around Internet.

Here is the quote from http://www.dvdplusrw.org FAQ:

The DVD+RW Real Time Video Format, also known as DVD+VR, is the video recording format stipulated by the DVD+RW Alliance, and supported by a great number of DVD+RW hardware and software manufacturers. This format allows adding, editing, partial deleting and partial over-writing on a DVD+RW disc, while still remaining compatible with ordinary DVD-Video players. This is different from the VR format as employed by DVD-RW and DVD-RAM recorders, which is completely different from the DVD-Video specification and hence such a disc cannot be played on a normal DVD player. As the DVD+VR format was designed to be 100% compatible with existing DVD-Video players...

Some rules are bent in order to allow some linear editing functions etc, and the end result is a DVD that has incorrect navigational data (fast-forwarding and searching problems can result from this), and also the disc sometimes has corrupt BUP files (these are back files of the IFOs), this would make the disc less robust to damage.

    Complete nonsense, to say politely.

    Back to topic.

I also have LiteOn 5001. And I just made a perfect copy of +RW disk recorded on 5001 using my PC where I have LiteOn 401S. I used DVDdecryptor in File mode. Then I used Nero 6.3.0.3 to burn the same +RW disk in DVD-Video mode. Plays without a problem on my three stand alones. No need for re-authoring.

  6. kabanero,

I just got a copy of Nero 6.3.0.3 and will try what you did. Did you copy all the files from the DVD, including .ifo and .bup files? Or did you just copy the .vob's and let Nero make the disk? (have not used Nero yet)

    yumagah,

Select File mode in DVDdycrypter. You have to select all files.
