I have read about the perils of using sticky labels and have no problem buying a cd/dvd printer. But, are there reasonably priced printable dvds out there? Does it ever go on sale?

I would take it that they are 96 cents each plus shipping. I just started using DupEZ 4x (leaddata01) from www.rima.com they are 90 cents each for 50, or 86 cents each for 100 of them plus shipping. The cost of the ink is a few more pennies each, and the cost of the printer a couple more pennies each disk (depends on the printer purchased), over the life of the printer.

Was this what you were looking for?

    I use Beall from Meritline:
    http://www.meritline.com/beall-1x-dvd-r-printable-blank-media-dvdr-disc-discs-dvd-case.html

I've never had a problem with the media itself (not one coaster...that wasn't my fault) and it seems to print fine using the Epson 900, but as to how the printing quality compares with other printable media, I have no idea. You can print on the Bealls right up to the hub, which is very nice. I do have some printable Taiyo Yuden CD-R media and the print results are similar to the Beall.

I know some people have had problems with Meritline, but all of my orders have been fine. (knock on my head)

    Hope that helps.

  8. I had 200 problems with Beall media and that's NO JOKE! Dumb thing is that I burn tons and tons a day and sometimes don't even watch them for awhile. As long as they are successful burns, I never thought to question it. Well low and behold, I started getting customers complaining and i started testing just to find that over 3 gigs the video started to pixelate and stop playing. I loved the beall's for their large printing surface but now buy Ritek with NO COMPLAINTS. Maybe I got a bad few batches of beall but I am not willing to chance it again.

Amazon has printable Memorex 4X (Ricoh) +R's on sale in 100 spindles for $99 with free shipping. Just bought a spindle and they check out as Ricoh Japan. I am assuming that you are in the USA.

The printable surface has to absorb the ink from the printer, so you will find mostly matte finish (never even heard of a glossy finish).

Start with quality media (try Ritek printables). Once you get the hang of it, experiment with the "lesser" brands. Saving $0.20 on a disc is not worth the aggravation of 6 months later finding out that the discs have "degraded".

It has a plain white non-glossy topping. I guess you could call it matte.

I didn't know there were problems with degradation. Is this due dye leeching?

In my last order to Supermedia store I got Ritek G04's injet printable. They were $60 (including shipping) for a spindle of 50. For $1.20, why bother with cheap media for $0.96?

    Tuxomatic,

I see that you have the Epson 900. Have you had any problem with the ink smudging when you touch it? Yesterday I bought the Epson R300 and I tested the ink afterwards to see if it was waterproof so I licked my finger and touched it and the ink came right off. So, I waited 24 hours like it said the instructions and it does the same thing. Have you had any problems with yours? I am using Memorex printable CD-Rs, mostly to experiment with....

I have the Epson 900 and the ink is dry as soon as the discs comes out of the printer. My guess for your problem is you're not using "inkjet printable" discs (printable discs are not the same as inkjet printable FYI).

Printable inkjet discs will smudge when any amount of moisture is applied to the disc, this is because the Ink is DYE BASED very similar to Large Digital Posters that quite a few Digital printer shops use, so if they use Dye Ink get the poster laminated straight away!!!

Pigment inks will be more water resistant but are generally more exspensive, Epson in Australia uses Dye and also Pigments inks, the pigments inks are available for use only in certain printers.

Definately keep moisture away from the Printable Inkjet media as smudging WILL happen, or you can apply very carefully a clear finish spray over the image which will protect it.

    Hope this helps
