Is there software that can run a diagnostic on a DVD to verify the disk was written correctly and be compatible on the highest number of players? I have noticed that each authoring program must write the lead-in a bit differently which causes some players to not be able to read it. Would be nice if there was a way to check it for correctness. before people returned it.

I burn all mine with Nero 5.5 using DVD/UDF mode (1.02) and don't even worry about such things.

So then you never have disks that don't play on someones player? I am struggling to get all my ducks in a row and don't have the experience of people that have been burning DVD's for a while. But now I have to get up to speed and get it right. So, NERO with UDF? OK, I will try that.

Never say never. There are players out there that won't play DVDr no matter what. UDF 1.02 is the most compatible though. All the newer ones that read the UDF 1.50 & 2.01 are supposed to be backwards compatible with the 1.02 format. If you want to be sure your discs can be read on older pre-Win98 machines, use the UDF/ISO bridge.
