I just converted Full Metal Jacket from PAL to NTSC and the only problem I now have is with the subtitles being the wrong colour and size.

    Here's what I did...

Ripped the DVD with DVD Decrypter.

Used VOBEdit to extract all of the tracks. I got .ac3 audio tracks, 12 subtitle tracks, and the .mv2 video (PAL).

I ran the PAL video through Canopus ProCoder to get an NTSC .mv2.

I then used IFOEdit to add all the tracks. It didn't like all of the subtitle tracks, so I used only two of them.

After using IFOEdit, the video worked perfectly (I'm assuming it will work on a pure NTSC system because mine plays both).

Here's the problem... the subtitles are off the screen, way too large and "fuzzy", and an off-colour green.

How can I get these to their normal state? I know that there's information in the .ifo (?) files or others that provide this information, but I don't know where or what to do with it if I find it.

Is there a way to "copy" the information from the original DVD and copy it over to this one?

    Thanks.

One more problem I just noticed... it also appears that all of the subtitles did not transfer. During the movie (when played in Windows Media Player), some of the subtitles do not appear.

Also, there's no option to change subtitles in WMP. Why?

Colors can be changed in the IFO with IfoEdit, but nothing else, since the subs consists of an image. For a PAL DVD this image is (mostly) 720*576 pixels. If you convert the m2v to NTSC (I presume 720*480) and overlay the subs picture of 720*576, the lower 94 pixels will be off screen, and those bottom pixels are where the action is, when we talk about subs!
I'd rip the PAL subs with SubRip, then convert them to NTSC sup with srt2sup.

Also, there's no option to change subtitles in WMP. Why?
Because WMP is no DVD player. PowerDVD and WinDVD (most notably) are.

I didn't think about that -- the subtitles are still in PAL standard while the video has been converted to NTSC.

I'll check out the subtitle programs you suggested. Is there a way to view/edit the actual graphic subtitles for languages that use different alphabets (e.g., Korean, Arabic)?

I did find some areas in the .ifo file that referenced colour. I changed the settings to match the ones in the original file, but now everything is grey instead of green. Maybe there's some other settings I'm missing?

    Thanks for the help.

My mistake on Windows Media Player. I thought that subtitles had worked at one point and then just didn't work with my project. I just realised that I was in fact using PowerDVD -- just right click and get the options for angles, subtitles, etc.

Nope, that's the only place where you can change the color.
You might have to do some trial&error here (even if copying the original color table should work):
    1) Set all to 00 80 80 (=black)
    2) Set one of them to 80 80 80 (=white)
    3) Test
    4) OK? Then stop, else take the next color and change it to 80 80 80

Repeat until you have white text with black outline.

Is there a way to view/edit the actual graphic subtitles for languages that use different alphabets (e.g., Korean, Arabic)?
I think there's a way to export each sub pic as a BMP in srt2sup too, even if I've not had cause to use that function myself...

Is there a chart that shows all the hex values for the colours? I would like to have yellow subtitles with black outlines and perhaps other colours for whatever I'm working on. Now that I have tools to do subtitles, I'll probably add some to my home videos since they have Italian language in them.

No chart, but IIRC the color values work like this:
First byte is brightness, second red, third blue. (or red/blue the other way around). Green is always at 80.

  9. Hi,

If you use the latest a4.04 version of SupRemap you can edit IFO files with colours directly!

    www.shipleys.eclipse.co.uk

    Regards

    Srt2Sup

PS the position information for the subtitle is in the VOB file and you can't edit the subtitles becayse they are bitmaps not text in the VOB file!
