I have several backups that I made using DVDShrink on cheap, generic DVD's. One of these quit playing recently, and I have decided to move them onto higher quality DVD media.
I used DVDShrink with Nero burning to make the backups. However, I am unable to make a copy of the backup (onto the new DVD media).
I have to load all the files from the DVD onto my harddrive, then make the copy. This takes an additional 20 - 30 minutes to read all the files from the DVD. Is there not a way for me to simply put in my old backup copy, and a new blank DVD, and copy from one to the other?
Currently - I'm just going back and using the original movie again, as it's a "one step" process. But this takes a long time as well.
I guess it doesn't matter in the end, as I can still do what I need to do. But was just curious - plus, would be more convienient.
Thanks!

I'm not aware of any freeware that copies on the fly. B's Recorder Gold that came with my LG 4040 B drive does it rather well.
DVDDecrypter 's ISO Read/Write modes should to the trick though. Are you ripping with the burner? My DVD-Rom drive rips much faster than my burner surprisingly...because it is a DVD-Rom/CDR Combo drive. -
If you already have them backed up to a standard DVD-5 recordable disc, shouldn't you be able to just do a data transfer by dragging and droppping the audio & video ts folders in Nero and burn them to another DVDr using the UDF 1.02?
But even if you could do this, wouldn't burning from the hard disk still be faster and more reliable?"There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon." -- Raoul Duke -
Thanks for the replies.
I do rip with my DVD/CD rom and not the burner.
The way I was trying to copy them was like this:
Open Nero - select "Copy Disc" under the DVD menu. (And of course, have both the original backup copy in my DVD rom and my blank DVD in the burner). And when I start to copy, tells me it cannot copy the files.
The only way it would work for me, is to select "Burn DVD Video Files". This is what I would do if I had ripped a DVD with DVD Decrypter and saved those files to my hard drive. But in this case, I select the DVD backup copy - and "Add" those files. It basically has to read them all from the DVD into memory before it will copy them. This is the part that takes about 30 minutes.
Once they're all in memory - I can burn them with no problem. Just seemed like it should allow a disc to disc copy. -
I think SJW is right......
No need to rip it since you already used DVD shrink, just Drag the folders Video & Audio folders to Nero.
If you go to DVD Shrink's website they have useful guides that show you how to manually put the these files into NERO. Definetly take a look there first -
Once backed up, you can copy the files using windows explorer. I think your problem is stemming from something to do with your drive config. It sounds like Nero is unsure that it can produce a constant stream from source to dest with your current setup.
Can you post the exact error message ?If in doubt, Google it. -
The exact error message is simply this:
"Cannot copy this disc to a DVD"
You mention that I can copy the files using windows explorer. Yes, I have no problem copying the files from the dvd to my hard drive. And then, Nero will burn them without any problem. (Not sure if this is what you were referring to or not).
But this is basically what happens when I make the copy with Nero. I can't simply do a disc to disc copy - it has to load all the files from the dvd disc into a temp folder on the hard drive, and then it burns them. Will not let me do a straight disc to disc copy. -
Good reply - told me what I needed to know.
Nero has an option "Cache files bigger than 64K on hard drive" which kicks in when you add items directly from disc be it data, music, videos...whatever. This is what copies the files to the temp dir. I seem to recall that you must do the Nero Drivespeed test so it knows the average transfer rates for audio and data before you can burn on the fly. It is definitely Nero saying it has a problem with supplying a constant stream of data. What is your master/slave config and on which channels ?If in doubt, Google it. -
Both of my drives (the DVD rom and the DVD burner) are set to "master" - and are by themselves (no other drives connected with them as slaves). (I was able to do this, as I have my hard drive connected through a SATA card.)
