  1. Hi,

I have had a Pioneer 105 for almost a year now, but it has just stopped being able to read the discs I have already created, blank DVD-R discs, and DVD-RW discs.
It can read CD's I've created, and original DVD's ok.
It whirrs for a while, then just says that no disc is inserted.
I have tried flashing to 1.33, and cleaned the heads several times.
Anyone have any ideas before I have to go through the arse of trying to get it fixed/replaced.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  2. well,it looks like thats what you will be doing.
sounds like the laser is misaligned.
meaning itll read the cds ok,but not dvds..
so ,go get a new writer.

  3. I just got word it was going to be swapped for an NEC 2500, cause noone has any 105's anymore.
They also said this was a fairly common problem with this drive.
I just had a look at the comments for that drive, and I have to say, I'm thinks I'm doing ok out of that !!
Every cloud has a silver lining!
    Waheeeey !

So, it reads everything except the DVD-R, DVD-RWs you've burnt?

Perhaps bad media? Have you tried to burn anything on new quality media?

The pickup is aligned on the fly with voice coil servo type control, there isn't anything to be out of alignment unless something breaks since there is no fixed alignment for it to work. The tracks are way too close for a drive to be 'aligned' in any other way than automatically, just changing heat would make all drives be out of alignment if they worked that way..

Considering that the voice coils are worked a lot to compensate for wobble, I'd imagine it's the driver amp that burns out on these.

Hey though it may actually have a seperate sensor for rough alignment. Just an interrupter so it knows when the head assembly is all the way in, so it knows when to start looking for the local alignment with the servo. If that gets too dirty, it may never think the head assembly is there or not moving if off is the normal state. No amount of cleaning the lens would help here since it's somewhere else of course..

Actually mine is out of warranty now, I'll have to open it up and give some real info on the actual design particulars. This may well still be just a dust issue or other simple fix, just not on the pickup lens but somewhere else, and should be easy for me to spot the most likely candidate spots even though mine works fine..

  6. well, misalignment being physical or electronical...either way its still ****ed.
no amount of cleaning fixes that.
