A couple of things you can check.
    1. Obviously make sure that all IDE cables are firmly connected.
    2. Make sure that you don't have any Master/Slave conflicts.
    3. Check that BIOS hasn't changed the setting to not installed.
    4. Check that BIOS can 'Auto Detect' the drives.
    5. Could also be faulty - try removing the drive and see if the system boots as normal.

I don't know what all you have, but, first, check that you have set the new device to proper orientation, ie, if it is slave, make sure the jumpers are set to slave, and that the primary device, the HDD is set to master.

It may be set to Cable Select, and I can't say if your board, or any board will see a second device if the first is CS, and another is Master, which is normal for shipping,

If you have to, set them both to CS, and put the HDD on the end, and the DVD in the middle.

But, then, how in the hell are you connecting these thing if they're on 1 cable, the wire isn't long enough.

    Just what is your setup?

    Cheers,

    George

In BIOS. down arrow to each device to highlight it and use Page UP, Page DOWN to select Auto. When you Exit and Save, if you don't have an option to Detect Hard Drives, it will find and list proper drives.

You did check that the jumpers are properly set, didn't you?

    Cheers,

  6. Done what you suggested and checked the jumpers all I am getting now is the motherboard logo with press tab to switch post or press delete for bios setup but when I press delete nothing happens do you think the ide controller may have packed up

  7. When you boot up the computer does the light blink on the front of the DVD-ROM drive?

Try setting your jumpers to CS (Cable Select)

What does "Press tab to switch POST" mean? Does it say anything else?

Or is that to SKIP POST?

I don't think the IDE controller is screwed.

You show XP in Details. Do you have a boot disk set? Can you see it it will find a floppy, and if it does do fdisk /mbr >enter, space after fdisk, and hit enter after mbr. You might have screwed up your Master Boot Record when it was confused about the drives, couldn't see the Primary drive's MBR. You can also (I don't know if this works with XP) type sys c: and hit enter. This will copy system files to C:\ in case you have garbled them somehow.

If this is no help, post again. Someone will be here.

Cheers, (Yeah, sure, like I'm in a cheerful mood )

Forget the CS. Did you somehow bend a pin on the IDE cable? Either on the MoBo connector or the Device end.

If the light stays on that usually means the connector is backwards (or it's broken). I know the light stays on constant with floppy drives when it's backwards. Unhook everything (IDE devices) reset the CMOS/BIOS, via the jumper or take the battery out for about 30 seconds.

If I were fixing it I would:
Hook up the HD with the OS on it only, reboot and see if it works. Then shutdown, connect the old DVD drive, reboot. If it works, great Then shutdown hook up the "new" DVD drive, if it still doesn't work your drive is bad, assuming you set your BIOS up correctly. After each addition.

Also put the Burner as master on the 2nd IDE channel, not slaved to the OS HD.
