  1. The last 30 mins of the movie is unreadable
the dvd light just flickers and I have to close powerdvd with the task manager

Sorry this is so vague but can anyone make an educated guess as to whether this is due to a faulty burn or dvdshrink

The dvd was probably burned whilst it was transcoded.
Could that have caused the problem?

I'm mostly making a guess here, but with the experience that I have I would say it's from bad media, or they may be some burn errors at the end of your disk. I highly doubt that the problem is from dvdshrink, I use shrink almost everyday and never have any problems, exept one time shrink could not decrypt the dvd, but then I just used dvd decyptor to rip it then shrink.

    yep, definite media issue

if you think it's anything to do with DVDShrink (which it won't be) then try playing the files from your HD using PowerDVD before burning them and you will see whether they play or not

  4. I've had this exact same problem, and it ended up being that the original DVD was in poor condition resulting in a lot of read errors when using DVD Decryptor. I was able to open it in DVDshrink, but at some point near the last part of the movie, it goes to shit. So you could burn this to 100 different DVD-Rs if you wanted with the same crap result. I checked it out before I ever burned one, so I didnt waste any. I ended up using IFOedit to recreate IFO files that I could use since I didnt need to compress. Then I was able to burn a working DVD-R.

  5. IMO it's BAD MEDIA ....... cheapo Princo disks always have problems towards the end of a movie .... it's to do with the dye not being spread evenly on the outer edges of the disk.
In some cases if you look hard in the right light, you can see patchy areas.

Try some Grade A Riteks m8 (not overprints) and all will be well.

  6. Well there is a problem in DVD Shrink 3.1.6 that cause freezing and stutterring... we can't always blame the media or burning software.

    Hi all.

I would advise you not to use v3.1.6, as I think I found a nasty bug ("bad media" symptoms, freezes/stuttering at layer-break).
I waiting to hear from dvdshrink about it.

  7. I had that same problem with OptoDisc. Everything played perfect but the last couple of minutes of the movie, which would freeze, skip and lock up. I started using better media and no more problems. I would recommend using the DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5 which seems to be the best one in my opinion. Can you tell us what media you used? I'm still thinking media myself, but could be wrong.. let us know..

  8. My experience with this problem turned out to be bad media (Verbatim DVD-R). I just used the bad media for burns less than 4GB that way it wasn't wasted.

  9. Hi all.

There is definately a bug in v3.1.6b that mimics bad media.
    http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33026

dvdshrink said it is present in all v3.1.x versions, but it hasn't been the case for me (maybe I have experienced a different bug).
It is also dependent on your set-top player: some v3.1.6b1 backups play fine on my Denon 3800, but all exhibit the "bad media" symptoms on my Pioneer DV626D.
It usually happens 2/3rd into the movie, so my guess is it has to do with the layer-break (maybe due to the fix for the Pioneer 120S).
These "faulty" backups also freeze WinDVD and Windows Explorer.

The same backups made with v3.1.5 Final, with the same re-authoring/compression settings, burned with DVD Shrink/Nero 6.3something, and using the same batch of Verbatim DVD-R 2x play fine in both the Pioneer, Denon and WinDVD.
