  1. Basically, I have converted VHS tapes to DVD-RAM using my Panasonic HS2. I am now trying to improve the original source material by using virtualdub etc... to improve the quality and then copy it back to a DVD-RAM disc to play back on my HS2, but I don't seem to able to do it.

    In detail, I have done the following;

Loaded DVD-RAM (Using LF M621e DVD MUlti Drive) and using MPEGVCR, I have edited part of the VRO file and saved it to my hard disk. (Using MTVmagen and DVDMovieAlbum SE 3, I can then save it back to a DVD-RAM albeit this is before I have done any enhancements)

Next, I have loaded the VRO file to Virtualdub, used the filters, compressed using DiVX5.1 codec and created a AVI file.

I have then used TMPGenc to convert back to MPEG2 file (DVD PAL)

Finally, I used MTVmagen to create an Mtvfile and tried using DVDMovie Album to save it back to the DVD-RAM.

I then get an error message

"as invalid format was found in the files, the part of the files could not be recognised" which stops the transfer back to the DVD-RAM. (even if I use a new formatted disc)

Being a complete novice, I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Can anyone advise or help me please.

  2. Well...it doesnt seem to be the dvdram disk, since you're able to burn to it before editing it. So it must be something you're doing with the software/video.

When burning with DVDmovie album...how are you trying to burn it to the dvd-ram? What format/burn method?

btw...i dont know much about this topic, so dont yell at me.

  4. I have also tried to copy it using explorer and whilst it does transfer the file can't be read by either the DVD drive or recorder

  5. This is really driving me crazy. I have tried everything I can think of to transfer the revised MPEG file back to the DVD-RAM disc but it just won't work.

Any help would be gratefully received.

I wonder how you think you will be able to produce a file which your Panasonic HS2 should be able to playback from DVD-RAM??

The VRO-files come along with an IFO- and a BUP-file which probably contains the video-file navigation details which you would be required to reconstruct. Also I am not sure if the file structure of the VRO-video files are identical to program-stream-MPG-files.

Therefore if you wish to playback recordings which you have edited on a computer you will have to generate a real DVD-structure and burn it it to a DVD-R or a DVD-RW. The latter might also work on your HS-2. I have a E30 and was able to playback DVD-RWs (Princo 1xspeed produced on a Pioneer A03). The E30 cannot even recognize blank, unrecorded or completely erased DVD-RWs and even freezes, but finalized DVD-RWs with a correctly recorded DVD-structure it is able to playback much to my surprise.

This is the procedure I usually use.

Put the DVD-RAM in my DVD-RAM-compatible burner. Copy the *.vro file to a designated folder of my choosing on my hard drive (this speeds up the process).

Open TMPGenc DVD Author and select "add file." It imports the file and puts it into MPEG-2 format. I can then edit out unwanted frames and build the appropriate menu.

When I'm done, I "open dvd writing tool" in TMPG and write back to the disk. Usually, though, since DVD-RAM is expensive, I just put it back on a DVD-R and re-use my RAM for something else.

As for "improving the quality of the video source," I don't quite follow what you mean. Someone else can help you there, but you'll need to be a little more specific, though. As for me, I don't believe you'll get better quality from a video than the original by simply re-encoding.
    You're never alone with schizophrenia.

  8. Thanks for the info.

I using virtualdub (filters) to try and improve the source material.

I am particularly keen on copying the file back to DVD -RAM. I wonder if it can be done then ?

    It can be done.

Are you trying to save the file to the DVD-RAM as a .VRO? You must have it in this format to be able to copy it back to the HS2.
