I just recently installed a netgear MR814 v2 hardware firewall, and now I am unable to connect to shareaza, WinMX, yahoo mesenger, or any automatic downloads from the Internet. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with this type of problem, and what I can do to solve it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I just thought of something, could Norton SystemWorks 2004 be the program that's causing the connection problems. It does seem to be overloaded with precautions...

You just need to open the ports for the specific applications your using. Or enable port forwarding. I dont think yahoo uses port 80, if true it would explain why its blocked by default also.

Grab the handbook of your firewall, you must connect to it and configure what kind of TCP/IP traffic is allowed (Inbound, Outbound), this is normally done connecting to the firewall using a browser, then you will be able to set the settings.

    Take a look at this:

    ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/MR814_RefGuide.pdf

I made the mistake of using Norton SystemWorks. Everytime I went to any website, it blocked it. The antivirus part is OK, but SystemWorks is a pain. Disable it and see if that helps. You should check the information pages for the services you are having trouble with. A firewall is so common these days, they should have some configuration information in their FAQ's, if it's needed. It's not that hard to set up a firewall, and once you've done it, it's usually problem free from then on.

Like Flaystus said, you just need to set up port forwarding for each service that you'll be using. Netgear has some of them preconfigured for you, if you log into the router using your browser. See this tread where we discussed it at length how to port forward:

Read the entire thread and you should have some idea of how to do this. If you have any questions, I'll try to help. I also have the Netgear MR814v2 router and I like it a lot. Easy to configure and use.
