Ive recently resolved my dma/pio problems with my pioneer 106d (well temporarily) and now ive encountered another problem which may be related to the orignal problem (im not sure).
Basically when im writing a dvd movie (other formats such as audio cd work fine); my writer seems to have periods where it does nothing, then possibly 5-10 mins later it kicks in again. The dvd still writes ok but it can take up to an hour to write a dvd at 4x.
When its writing/hanging there are no problems with system resources/cpu usage so i know it hasnt reverted from dma to pio, which was my original problem.
Any clues anyone :P

What kind and have you tried other burning software?
MMMMMMMMMMMMM..........sprinkles -
I don't mean to hark on the obvious or insult anyone, but, I take it you have already obtained latest BIOS and VIA 4.37 chipset drivers and have checked for properly installed ASPI in XP

sounds like its running in PIO mode, instead of DMA.
on my BIOS ive got a setting that lets me pick between UDMA and PIO.
has to be enabled to write and use my hard drives in DMA mode.
which is a pain..1 hour for a dvd and 45 mins to unzip some files sucks.
so what you could do is right click on my computer, select properties, then go to hardware, device manager and click on IDE devices, and see if theres a DMA setting there.
if not then see the bios, and finally, take out the 106,and reinstall it,but in device manager, uninstall if from the system.
that might solve the problem. -
already tried that, thats what i did to solve the problem of my writer using all my cpu power...it kept reverting to pio mode....which is something to do with xp detecting x ammount of errors and so it switches to PIO. I reinstall the IDE channels to solve the CPU usage problems but it doesnt fix the hanging problem.
