I currently have a NEC 1300a I’ve been happy with it using revised firmware’s (Herrie’s). I know that the new burners that will burn dvd-9’s (double layer DVDs) are out or are coming out, My questions in will any of the newer 8x burners, possible have the ability to burn dvd-9’s with a firmware upgrade. I’m sure that’s a dumb question because that’s the last thing that the manufactures would want is for you not to have to buy their new hardware.

If you were a Mfr how would you get people to buy your existing drives when they know much better ones are coming out soon? you "spin" the line that they will be upgradeable to the new spec!. What they do is neither confirm nor deny but "hint" that maybe they will be. I think maybe, now that the specs are coming out, a few, a very few, of the top 16x drives will be able to be upgraded. But like anything, is it better to be on the bleeding edge ..
dual layer pros ... higher data capacity, 1:1 copies of most movies
dual layer cons ....higher initial cost, higher cost of media, untried technology, untried compatibility, unknown durability...possiby software incompatibilty, lower speed of burning.
Im waiting for GodotCorned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
