I experience this too. It happens, for me, when the video is not very good quality. I don't have an answer for you, yet. I will be using a TBC (time base corrector) to see if that helps and will let y'all know.

Yes that sounds like what i'm getting. When it's a good tape all is fine but when the video isn't so good that's when the blackouts occour. Did you find any other results McNose? Did the TBC help you out? Thanks

The TBC didn't help at all. It happens with the Pioneer 310S (more than 1 unit). It didn't happen with a short test at Best Buy using a Zenith Recorder (only about 30 second test). It does happen on the Philips 75 I bought, but...
On the Philips I tried to transfer the same tape twice using 2 different VCR's (VHS & S-VHS). Both had blackouts while I was watching the transfer, but...
VHS- 2 brief blackouts
S-VHS- no blackouts
Both had audio problems- audio gliches (a couple, three per minute)
I've spoken with Pioneer and I will be sending the tape to them so they can hopefully determine the issue. However, I am still going to return my 310S because I don't feel like waiting.
