  1. Hi,

I have a few questions on the various formats:

How can I tell if a .mpeg file is a VCD or SVCD.

How can I tell if a .avi file is DIVX, XVID, or AVI ?

If I convert DIVX to DVD format, is the quality compromised?

    Thanks,

    Derrill

if mpeg1 and 352x240/288 it is VCD and if mpeg2 480x480/576 it is SVCD.

    Wanna re-think that one?

Use GSpot to determine what codec you are using to decode an AVI. There's numerous versions of DivX and XviD, but all are MPEG4 codecs and can be interpreted by your computer multiple ways (The #1 reason XviD has green blocks isn't the encoding, it's the decoding).

As to MPEG, drop it into a player and look at the resoltuion. Most players like PowerDVD will give you a resoltuion and type (MPEG1 or MPEG2). Framerate is important for movies you downloaded, since trying to convert a 25 fps PAL movie to NTSC is a pain.

For any video, framerate and resolution is important (PAL/NTSC issues). Interlacing is also important, since certain DivX support it, but it's very uncom,mon.....while MPEG2 is generally always interlaced (except the lowest resolutions).
