  1. I've looked into several options, but DishNetwork will swap out one of my receivers for $100 installation fee and no extra charge a month, which is a lot cheaper than I could ever get even a non-HDD DVD recorder for. The latest model will hold up to 100 hrs., so that's way more than I'd ever need. I have one downstairs that holds 25 hrs. and I've never filled that one up.

Occasionally I transfer something to VHS, but if I had one in my room I wouldn't need to do that. I'd swap the downstairs one for mine upstairs, but the plain receiver doesn't have an optical digital audio output, so I'll just get the newer HDD one.

It will be a while before I get a DVD recorder with the HDD, since most are at least $500. Maybe if the DishNetwork deal changes, I'll look into it....

  2. Understanding the nature of legitmate backup for own personal use,

I have succesfully backed up macro-ed vhs using a mitsubishi dvhs vcr (w/tbc) through a Video Enhancer from FacetVideo to my sharp DVD Recorder.

The TBC does a great job of cleaning up the video but isn't necessary as well as using s-vid connections but what is essential is the Video Enhancer and at $99.00 it is sweet.

A cleaner solution would be to capture at high bitrate on a computer but using this configuration is near realtime with only menus being added using DVD Author after transfer from dvd-rw to computer and then burn using RecordNow.
