What do you all think of the movie? I thought it was rather boring. I think Coppola pulled some string to get Bill Murray to appear in his daughters (Sofia) movie. I don't see how this movie got all these great reviews, besides the fact that dad must of pulled some strings.

Haven't seen it myself - main reason was two mates watched it and said it was crap.
Allways puts me off when someone tells me a film is rubbish -
I'll wait for the DVD. Murray's movies since Ghostbusters just havn't been up to par, except for Groundhog Day
-
I ended up renting it - a friend said it was one of the best films he's seen in a while. I didn't get it...
@tgpo: Basically I agree, but add KingPin to your "good" list - one of the funniest movies I've seen... -
Oh, it's already on DVD. I'll look for it.
Kingpin was fair at best IMO -
Loved it. Thought it was great. Watched it in Cinema with a mate and have already watched his R1 import with a large single malt over Ice
Buddha says that, while he may show you the way, only you can truly save yourself, proving once and for all that he's a lazy, fat bastard. -
i had heard that this was great/wonderful/fantastic, but it turned out to be pretty crummy. i usually "get" what it is watching movies where you're supposed to "get" something.. i liked the virgin suicides, but this movie was just ehhh.. its kinda like nothing ever happened.. it seemed like there was never a climax in this movie.

I loved it. Got it on DVD the day it came out. Its not the GOAT but its a nice movie you can enjoy. Anything Else is also good. Anyone see that?

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
Living in Japan, I think I was able to appreciate it more. Otherwise, learning about Japan and being able to understand Japanese culture and what they are surrounded by might give you a little more to go on.

I absolutely abhor films where postprod doesn't catch stuff like that; it's downright rookie. I tried to figure out if it was symbolic, but nothing.
A few reasons:
- I think Murray is hilarious. His recent works with Wes Anderson are some of his best stuff. I love subtle humor.
- Scarlett Johansson may be mopey but I still think she's hot.
- The cinematography was fantastic. Lance Acord did "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation" and was spendid lensing those as well.
- I really felt the tension between the two main characters. At first it was a bit unnerving but very sweet at the end.
- Even the title is wonderfully witty.
I picked up the DVD but I'm sure there will be a better Criterion release of it sometime in the near future. I don't much like fast-paced movies anymore because action is such an easy device for capturing people's attentions and getting them to rave about a movie. I like dialogue and character depth. This was actually a pretty straight-forward movie. There were no surprise plot twists and the ending... well no need to ruin it for those who haven't seen it -

yeah, i'm with -navvie on this. i like sleeper movies. (my wife call them sparse) i agree that most action/comedies are formulaic at best. i don't like being hit over the head with whatever it is i'm supposed to "get". i also like ambiguity - like the way you don't hear what he whispers in her ear at the end. i think it makes artwork more open to interpretation. that's probly why i usually dig music with little or no words more than the non-stop 3.5 min. pop-palaver.
...speaking of music, that's one of the main reasons i like this movie. as with Virgin Suicides, Sophia knows how to kick out a nice soundtrack. i don't know what strings she (or her dad) pulled to get kevin sheilds (ex- my bloody valentine front man) to come out of retirement - but god bless her. i guess i grew up on mtv but i like seeing pretty video with pretty music behind it. ...scarlett johansen...
in closing, i'm also a big wes anderson fan. i think he really helped bill murray segue into the indie film scene. what's great about lost in translation is it's like bill murray being himself. you always see bill murray in films where he's doing his shtick (funny stuff, mind you) - but i thought it was great to get the occassional glimpse behind the veneer that sophia gives us in this one. she's a cutie too! -
rally, not entirely true.. if you go to a crappy theater you will notice more boom mics.. a perfect example of this is 'a beautiful mind'.. the first time i went to watch it i went to a cheap theater, i was only half paying attention (i was groping a girl i had met earlier in the day) but i noticed a buttload of boom mics.. about a week later i went to a much better theater and didnt notice them at all..
i watched lost in translation again last night, i stand by the fact that its just kinda boring.
