Pioneer limits the media you can burn at 8x (and 6x). With rev 1.05 the only media that are allowed by Pioneer to be written at 6x and 8x are the following:
Code:
TTG01 (TDK Generation 1)
SONY08D1 (Sony 8x Generation 1)
TYG02 (Taiyo Yuden Generation 2)
FUJIFILM03 (Fuji Generation 3)
TTG02 (TDK Generation 2)
MXL RG03 (Maxel Generation 3)
Therefore, the only way to burn other media at 8x is either if the media provides its own 8x strategy, or if we use one of the strategies above.
Extensive testing showed that the best strategy to burn 4x media at 6x and 8x was the FUJIFILM03, and this is the strategy that is being used with this patch.
At least for rev. 1.05, we will not be releasing a patch with a strategy different than Fuji, so live with Fuji or don't!
But, provided you use quality 4x media, you should realise as well as we do that the the Fuji strategy is working pretty well
Another important thing to bear in mind is that 8x burning is ZCLV, which means that the burn actually begins at 6x speed and then, around 650 MB, the drive increases its speed to 8x (after performing a 8x OPC?).
Most of the failures you will get at 8x will happen at the 650 MB OPC, which means that if your disc doesn't get past 650 MB, you get a coaster.
With 6x on the other hand, only one OPC (6x) is performed at the beginning, therefore if it fails, you can reuse the media at a lesser speed because no data has actually be written.
And last but not least, whatever happens to your drive when burning media at higher speed than the one they are supposed to sustain is your OWN problem. It's neither Pioneer's nor mine.
You take a risk, you assume the risk. But if I were you, I REALLY wouldn't try burning 1x or 2x media at 6x or 8x. Only quality 4x ones.

I'm going to get an 8x drive in the next day or so. I'd been planning to get a Plextor, but now that the Pioneer 107D is at Newegg, I'm thinking about it. While I like the idea of 8x writing to -R disks, all of my players will accept +R's, so I'm wondering if there's any real advantage. I take it this is hacked firmware.
Which would you get? -
With the original 1.05 firmware for the Pioneer 107 I couldn't get any discs to write at 8x speed. With the hacked firmware the only discs I have which don't write at 8x speed is a Datasafe +R certified 8 speed. All my other discs which are 4x speed have written at 8x and played fine on a Pioneer 646 DVD player. The discs are mainly Ritek G04 discs of various brands and even unbranded. The drive also rips much faster too. Great hack and suddenly I'm much happier with the drive.
I wish I could say the same of my NEC 2500.

Baldeagle23: what software are you using with the 107?
UPDATE: I just ordered a 107D from NewEgg, so we'll see how it works. Stay tuned! -
Good, that's what I have. I'd heard it wouldn't work with the 107, but I guess it does....

Hi there great burning 8x as we speak with 4x ritek, only one small prob, after the 650mb stage the 8x kicks in but when i take disc out there you can see where this has happened on the disc (different colour) the disc still plays fine but just wondering if happened to anyone else,
-
thats whats meant to happen.
and if it is going to **** up,thats where itll happen.
so it is "normal".
the buffer drops and then the writer speeds up from that mark and will increase to whatever you set it at -
i found this firmware to be flawless a magnificent job certainly all the princo g04 disks i have used (-r) and the standard ritek +r 4x have burned well at 8x with verify.
i quick point for all, not all dvd players will work with 8x written media whatever the brand and many that will except it will stutter further xbox is very awkward at 8x however 6x seems 100% fine even with older units.
despite this the pioneer 107d has just become the leading 8x writer on the market for compatability and function due to hacked firmware how ironic.
dump the plextors nec and sonys and all the taiwan junk in the bin and sod official pioneer firmware upgrades until the hack changes them this is perfection.
