  1. Hello,
I run analyze from disk fragmenter in xp home edition on one of my drives. It states i should defrag this drive.
When i erase a file i just tried to zip, ( thats resident on that drive ) then check with disk fragmenter again, it no longer says i should defrag.
It did the same before/after i emptied the recycle bin.
Should i defrag anyways? Is there something in the "report" i should look at to determine if i should defrag even though xp says i don't need to?
Do you know of a link to educate me on defraging?
Thanks in advance for your time.

  2. I defrag before every DVD burn. A fragged drive is the only thing that causes my burner to make coasters

if it says you dont have to defrag after deleting that file, then that file is your problem, its probably pretty fragmented. if you need that file, then create it and then defrag. if you dont need it, then delete it and dont worry about it. i personally defrag about once a week, whenever i have some free time. ill defrag more often if im doing a lot of capturing and editing

  4. If one file is the diff between defragging or not, then you are not heavily defragged so its less urgent. Copy the file to removable medium THEN defrag then copy file back, (the copy back will mean that file will be in contigous sectors (defragged).

I personally defrag only like once a month, even though I backup and encode a lot of stuff. I noticed that the more I defragment the slower my system eventually gets. Even though it is kind of faster just after the defragging, it becomes even more messed up then before the defrag. It's just something I noticed.

  7. Hi,
This is an extension of my initial post. Thanks for all your valuable input.
I have a 14GB file I moved from one drive ( partition ) to another. After doing the "move", XP said I should defrag the drive. The drive only has the one 14GB file on it.
Should it take forever to defrag this drive?
The system said it was defragging, but it seemed to be stuck on 3% for greater than 10 minutes.
Also, the system meter was showing the CPU running at/near max, even after I halted the defrag.
Once again, Thanks in advance for your time.

You have a program running in the background that's stopping it. CTRL-ALT-DELETE and shut down all the ones you don't need.
