A friend has lent me some new dvds, the problem is that the quality is very low on the discs.
I know that with MPEG2 files you can put them through TMPEGenc and up the quality so they'll become about 4GB but is there anyway to do this with VOB files?
If it helps this is exactly what DVD Decrypter ripped
VIDEO_TS.BUP - 6KB
VIDEO_TS.IFO - 6KB
VTS_01_0.BUP - 102KB
VTS_01_0.IFO - 102KB
VTS_01_1.VOB - 1,048,574KB
VTS_01_2.VOB - 306,314KB
The other disc has a similar set-up with the addition of VTS_01_3.VOB and VTS_01_4.VOB and is about 3GB in size so I may need help in splitting it onto 2 discs.

Increasing file size will not increase the quality.
Generally, you won't get any better than what you start off with. There are a couple of filters in the Advanced section in TMPGEnc that you may want to try but be careful.
There is a TMPGEnc guide under the Tools section.Regards,

Can you move the slider along the bottom to scan through your VOBs?

Can you load the VOBs into any other program, like VirtualDub?

Rob -
I think you are taking the wrong approach, you need to extract the video and the audio from the VOB in order to get your m2v and ac3 files which you should be able to load into any MPEG Encoder and re-encode the video with a higher bitrate.
All you need is tools that will extract the files, i have always used Graphedit to extract the streams and re-encode, its very easy to use, and you can do multiple VOB files all in one go.
There are some decent guides on how to do this on www.digital-digest.com -
There's nothing wrong with the approach:

I think there is either a software conflict going on here or the VOBs are corrupted.Regards,

I've had a look at digital-digest but can't seem to find any guides.
It's probably a software conflict Rob as the actual files play in the PC and on a set-top player. Can you recommend any other programs as all I want to do is to increase the bit-rate. -
Can you open the VOBs with VirtualDub. If so, you could try and frameserve to TMPGEnc.
How to frameserve (dvd2avi / VirtualDub / Avisynth / VFAPI)Regards,
Rob -
Like I said, increasing the bit-rate will not give you a better product. You're stuck with what you have.
Regards,
Rob -
I get an error message
no video frames found in MPEG file.
The only way it would see VOBs though is if I selected All Files from the file type drop box -
Hmmmm......
Clutching at straws here..... get the trila version of TMPGEnc DVD Author and see if you can edit/re-author the VOBs with that.Regards,
Rob -
Doesn't allow me to edit the file size just cut them.
Are there any programs like DVd Decrypter where I can rip straight from the dvd into a file I can edit? -
OK, don't edit them, just re-author them to a separate VIDEO_TS folder.

Rob -
VirtualDub won't open vob files (I don't think that is) but VirtualDubMod will. I think VirtualDubMPEG will also. Once open in either program you can apply filters. I also think you could then frameserve to TMPGEnc if you want.
If you want you can demux those vob files using TMPGEnc and MPEG Tools. Just choose "Files Type (*.*) in the open box so the vob files will show up in your folder.
If the DVD disk is either a backup copy or a personal creation you can open the original VOB files straight from the dvd disk. They might not load as fast as from the HDD though. You could copy them to your HDD with Windows Explorer if you wanted, this would help the file open speed.
Good luck.
