  1. This is the strangest thing!! I recorded a movie onto a blank dvd+rw disc using my stand alone philips recorder. I then thought it would be cool to edit the boring philps menu and perhaps add a trailer or two, as I had enough disc space.

Okay, so I did this and all worked well. However, I now want to copy this on to a standard DVD+R disc. To do this, I have to rip my DVD+RW to my hard drive and then use Nero to burn this on to a DVD+R. But when I rip the Vob files to my hard drive, the total file size is 7.95gig????!!!!! I even had a look at my DVD drive (D Drive) and the total file size being represented is 7.95 gig. On a 4.7 gig disc!!! How????

What I have notived is that the .vob files seem to have been duplicated, i.e. where the movie has a .bup, .ifo files etc and then the vts_01_01; vts_01_02 etc .... this is then replicated with vts_02_01; vts_02_02 etc... I have tried everything but I cannot get my edited menu and movie to now fit on a standard disc, unless I shrink it with DVD Shrink.

But how can a 4.7 gig DVD+RW disc contain 7.95 gig worth of movie. Help!!!!!!!!

I struggled with this. I have a DVDR75 and wanted to do the same thing as you and by taking hints from lots of posts I have a method for doing basically what you want to do .
My basic method is as follows :-
I put the RW in my DVD drive - close the pop up window when it reads the disc.
The I use TMPGenc DVD Author I Click on ' create new project ' then " add DVD video ' . Locate the DVD drive and click on and open the Video TS folder , this will show the contents of the folder which seems as you said to have duplicate files in it , Highlight Title 1 and click next then tick ' copy the clip video data tothe HDD ' Browse and send it to a folder you can find easily. I usually create a new folder on the desktop before I start.
This will create a mpg file in the folder which you can then use to edit. The file size and length of video depend on the record mode you used . If you want to get quite a few programmes on the dvd-r you would need to use M4 or M6 just to keep the file sizes relatively small. I do not know of any way to compress files after recording so this must be done prior to recording .
Once you have the mpg you can close TDA , the file is safe in a folder.

Editing is a strange process , I cannot find an editing software where you can cut chunks out and save smaller files , nothing likes the DVD-VR format.

However , this what I do , it may seem a little long winded but it works for me. I'll call TMPG DVD Author TDA from now on.

Open TDA - Create new project - From now on the following procedure needs to be repeated for each section of video you want in your project.

Click 'Add File' - Locate your mpg - open the mpg
    Click 'Chapter Cut Edit'
Select a start and end point for the first clip
(I would go from the start of an episode or film to the first adverts say)
Then right click on the video and click 'cut all but currently selected range'
    Then Click OK
Then click 'Add new track' on the left of the screen.

Click 'Add File' Locate mpg - open mpg
    Click Chapter Cut Edit
Select a start and end point for the next clip
( this time I would start say at the end of the first adverts to the start of the second adverts)
Then right click on the video and click" cut all but currently selected range'
    Then click OK
The click 'Ad New Track' on the left of the screen.

Keep repeating the process until you have everything you want in the project.

The If you want to you can create a menu then output will create a new Video-ts file that you can burn to a DVD-R with Nero or something like it.

I had a lot of episodes of a series on two RW's so I got both of them to HD folder and just kept dragging them into TDA and got 10 half hour episodes easily to a DVDR. Each episode had a thumbnail on the menu and I could go straight to the episode I wanted. Worked great.

By selecting start and end poits in TDA your original mpg is not cut or altered in any way. TDA just ignores the parts you dont want.

If any one else out there has found any other way to do this or If my way is the best way to do it please let me know.
I hope this all makes sense to you.

  3. Thanks for your detailed response. I will give this a try this evening....it is so frustrating though.

If I were a programmer, I would be very rich. It seems no one is capable - or wants to make software that can do all correctly first time round. They either don't accept .VOB files, AC3 sound format, won't edit -VR discs correctly, no sound on menus etc. I have tried everything from Ulead to SprucUp etc....there isn't a single bit of software on the market that does everything well.
