porn is where is the money is at -- and wedding stuff ....
or combine both"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I folded to the kiddies with Macs who are undercutting my prices to do stuff in iMovie and iDVD. People would rather see templates than pay for something original so I'm rather vexed at the community. Eventually they'll see someone else's "special wedding" DVD that looks exactly like theirs and realize spending a little cash on a completely custom job would have made it just a little more special than the other one. I can't get over how much people spend on events like weddings (I perform at them at usually more than $500 for a few pieces) not to pay $200 for an hour of edited film, custom menus, slideshows, and probably 20 DVDs? Inconceivable...
I've found most of my business doing training videos, seminars, and other corporate work where what they want is pretty straight-forward conversion with professional-looking menus and navigation. Best part is they usually don't care how much they spend. Another good idea is to buddy up with an event videographer who hasn't brushed up on their digital video editing and DVD authoring skills. Just trick them into getting a Sony DSR-500 for filming and always ask to borrow it. I've actually rented my video-editing system to videographers to work on since they can't afford a high-end editing machine and their video equipment.
I do think a professional VTR is an important piece of equipment to have if you're going to start a business doing it. I think I have to put that ahead of the DSR-250 I wanna buy -

Long live templates, long live competition, long live an alternative pricing structure, long live a free market economy and the long live the next generation.
Willtgpo, my real dad, told me to make a maximum of 5,806 posts on vcdhelp.com in one lifetime. So I have. -

I actually really like iMovie. The newest version is very nice and is becoming less and less a "newbie" program.

BJ_M is that the new sony software ?????? well i have adobe after effects 6 pro and adobe primo //// but they have step learning curves.... i was lookin for a cheap and easy way to do editing while i learn the adobe stuff
Sorry rallynavvie about u folding man but thats just competition...... hell i say the same thing about our jobs moving over seas for cheaper labor but the bottom line is business is business -
If I wanted to be an ass I'm sure there's something in the EULA for iMovie and iDVD about using those programs for profit. Besides, they aren't offering anywhere near the options I am. I still get a lot of commercial customers (which I prefer) from networking through my day job.
You are far better off diving in and learning Premiere and AfterEffects because those two will be two of the most useful programs you'll ever use editing video. Also be sure to get TMPGEnc for software encoding as it offers far more customization of MPEG encoding which will come in handy. Though the option to structure GOPs to aid in placement of chapter points out of Premiere and into Encore is nice if you need chapter points to be precise. If you get Encore I'd also suggest getting Photoshop as the menu integration is very handy. The CS version of Photoshop takes it a step further and offers menu creation in rectangular pixels and has templates for safe-zones. If you want something cheaper for menu creation check out DVD Menu Studio.
If you want to spend the money the Total Training products are excellent for learning Adobe apps. They are a bit pricey. Sometimes you can rent the "Classroom in a Book" series from Adobe from libraries in tech colleges and the like. I'm learning the finer points of Premiere from one right now. -
