  1. I was talking to a friend of mine about vcds, and he happens to be from the middle east and said to me that he plays his vcd's on a regular stero system, like aiwa, and sony. i couldn't believe him, but is it possible?

Actually this is true! I was looking in the ads on sunday and i noticed that i think Sharp? came out with a stereo mini system like a normal stereo and it can play dvd's and it has an s-video hookup and regular hook up to the TV! crazy huh?, but in the middle east and the eastern part of the globe vcd's are more popular than dvd's so i would assume that they do have a VCD player or at least a DVD player in a mini shelf system stereo that plays vcds!!

Yup,it's very true,In my country (Indonesia),almost every hi-fi system can play vcd/dvd,from mini shelf to midi. Years ago, when vcd starts to get popular,we can modify our regular cd player to play vcd. We just have an mpeg card installed (about $30). But know a standalone vcd player cost as low as $50,no reason to modufy anymore.
