In order to run SVCD2DVD , requires an install of a 22mb program, of which sounds to have nothing to do with DVD anything? What was it ?,,...
Ver.1.1....or something like that. Is this program worth it??

Do you not have a broadband connection? If you do, it should take all of 10minutes from d/l to install. If you don't have a broadband connection I would think that MS would provide it on disc (for a fee I'm sure)...

Either way this piece of software does the job... and does it well, well enough for me to d/l 22meg to use Chrissy's program..

Have DSL. Need to confirm that I can take an analog VHS recording ,
capture with my device (yes, have it) , then burn that to DVD in true DVD
format , not simply as "special" mpeg2 , which limits greatly how much I can fit on standard DVD4.7g disk.

Would it not be better to capture straight to mpeg2 rather than mpeg1 and then convert. Cant really see the sense in what you are trying to do.

I capture analog VHS as .mpeg2. A 2hr. video is too large for DVD4.7 disc. Need to shrink. As many of these tapes are 16 yrs. old, I'd like to save at best quality. Problem; how to shrink video....not by greatly reducing mpeg quality settings. Or, do I give in, and figure on editing each video down to just under what will fit on one disc, then pick up from there on next disk, and on and on like that.
If I go with one disc per one VHS , then I have to shrink video. I thought if I could convert mpeg to .ifo's, .vob's etc., as in DVD ripping- or preferably capture directly as these files...then I could simply use DVDshrink, or equivalent to compress the video just enough to fit a DVD+R disc. May be getting way too time intensive is another concern , as I must have at least 100 hours of video tapes.

  7. From the questions you are asking, I'd say you'd be better off in the newbies section of this website rather than asking qustions about how to fit a 2hr VSH cap on to DVDr using SVCD2DVD.

Quickest route is to capture as Mpeg2 but with settings that will fit your tape onto a dvd..
If you use highest quality settings then use dvdshrink you proberly will end up with the same quality...
Try a tape and see which gives the best results.
I would agree with AlaphGeek try one of the other forums as you should get a better responce on which software is best..

    Dear mrlewp,

There are various possible resolutions and bitrates in MPEG-2. And then, of course, there is MPEG-1.

It is said that VCD is "VHS quality". Another famous saying is "Garbage in, garbage out."

I do not mean to say that what comes from VHS tapes is garbage, but just that quality will not improve beyond the VHS quality you feed the Capture device, whatever resolution you record it in.

Up until recently, I have recorded in MPEG-1 (VCD) format. Only lately I have learned that -if you do not want to use the captured material for making "compliant" VCDs- the bitrate can be as high as 1850 Kbps. As compared to the 1150 Kbps of "compliant" VCD.

(I make them with an ATI Radeon AIW, and I must say they are better quality than the 1150s of my ripped VCDs. Somehow they also keep in sync better.)

Most recently I have taken to capturing in Half D1 MPEG-2. Resolution 352x576 (NTSC 480) at 1999.4 Kbps. They are even better. Though I must say, ONLY if the source is "straight from TV'. For analog VHS it does not add much, if any, quality. Only size.

    Half D1 lets me put ca. 240 mins on a 4.7 Gb DVD+R, MPEG-1 at 1150 ca. 450 mins (7.5 hours!), MPEG-1 at 1850 ca. 270 mins.

(By the way, I now always capture in 48K audio. Saves a lot of time in SVCD2DVD -and TMpgEnc DVD Author).

    Maybe this helps a little.

  12. What is the problem downloading a tiny "22mb" piece of software. That is only 22/1000 of a bit. Now 22MB is another thing. I used to enjoy the adds for 600 mhz computers (0.6 Hertz is pretty damn slow [should have been 600 MHz]). Now that they spin at GHz rates this problem has gone away.
