  1. hey-
    i have a dumb question...
i recently purchased some dvd's that do not play on my computer.
they play on a dvd player on a television set, but not on my computer's dvd player.
all my other dvd's play on my computer fine.

    just these 2 don't.

is it possible that a dvd could be encoded so it cannot be played on a computer's dvd player?

or is it defective somehow, even though it plays fine on regular dvd players?

what do you mean by they wont play? do you mean they lock up the computer? or they just wont open in a dvd software? they might be encoded in a different region if you bought them from somewhere not in the U.S. if thats the case, you can run the video through dvd shrink and make it region free. or maybe its just that your computers dvd-rom drive is set up for the wrong region. go to my computer, right click on the drive and hit properties. there should be a tab called dvd region or something like that. make sure its set to region 1 if you are in the US. but be careful, you can only change the region a few times before the drive is locked

  3. it's not a region issue, all my dvd's are region 1, and i live in canada.
my dvd player for my computer has always and only been set to region 1.

the problem is that my player (windvd) simply won't play it.
won't give me a menu screen, nothing.
the player just sits there with an hourglass going forever.

    same with windows media player.
it will however recognize the dvd, tell me it's title, chapter titles, etc. but will not play it.

my dvd player on my computer has always played my movie dvd's no problems, always fine but these 2 new dvd's just do not play.
