I have read all the post about the speed issue and discs with the LG GSA 4040B. Here are my particulars.
First and foremost, I have updated to A302, yet when using Nero 6. and alcohol 120 both state that media is 4X (Princo DVD- 4X and Memorex DVD- 4X) but actual speed during reading & burn is 1.1 to 1.5. When I use different media (E3 works and pine (both claim 4x) the burners state burning at 2x but actual speeds are around 1.8 to 1.9, faster than the 4x discs. I have even rolled back to A301 to see if there is any difference, and none. OS is XP, GSA is only drive, dont know what else to try or do. Can someone help? Thanks

Have you checked to make sure DMA is enabled for the drive? With DVD Decrypter how long does it take to rip a DVD9 (8G)? It should take about 17 min (try a few).
I am a bit confused when you say reading at 1.5. Below is a Nero Transfer Rate test on a 4X BeALL I burned. As you can see the drive averages 6X and hits 8X at the end. Using XP Pro, sp1.

Followed your post, DMA is set on all settings. Copying a disc to disc takes 30 min for read and 30 min or more for burn. THe speeds are as posted in Alcohol 120. Just tested speed with Nero and was around 1.8 with DMA on across the board. Dont know what else to try

Grab A DVD and rip it with DVD Decrypter. It should start , Read Rate at about 3.5X and gradually get higher. Does it? -
Just ripped a disc with DVD Decryptor 3.1.9.0 and it topped out at 6.8X. DMA is enabled but I get a burn speed of 1.6X using Maxell 4X +R (Ricoh Japan). Not so with Maxell 4X -R which gives me the full 4X on burning. Seems to be that the LG is picky on media. Firmware for the drive is at A302...

OK, finally fixed my own problem. Past poster was right to switch to DMA but couldnt do it, always defaulted back to PIO. Uninstalled and reinstalled IDE devide, real novice here, but, finally searched info on motherboard and found BIOS update, specific problems speeds on CDRW. After trying may times to update, and not really sure what I was doing, plus the fact that all forums said dont update if not broken, and dont update from floppy, and most importantly dont update if you dont know what you are doing, I updated anyway, and now avg speed test at 5.97, end speed of 7.6, could never pass 1.87. Anyways, if I can fix it, anyone can....

if device manager will not allow a switch from PIO to DMA you will need to visit your motherboards website to see if there is a bios update, then flash your bios. I shouldnt be giving you directives as I lucked into my fix, but, just finished burning 4x 14 mins instead of 37 mins...
