    Hi All!

Can I create a DVD without a menu using this recorder?

Only if you use VR mode, which reduces compatability.

Otherwise, the menu doesn't take up much space on the DVD if you just press OK for the default settings.

  4. I have a Sony Digital8 Cam. What I want to do is transfer it to DVD but not just the video but the date and time also. Does the 210 stamp that onto the video clips some how? Some thing like a subtitle so I can turn it on and off?
Thank you much in advance for any reply.

Like all other standalones, it will only record one video stream. If you want the date/time stamp, it will need to be outputted from the cam to the DVDR as part of the videostream.

    It will be on permanently.

Thanks for the info. I plan on using firewire for the video transfer. So, what you are saying is that there is no way I can preserve the date and time the clips were taken when transfered to DVD and have it displayed as needed?
I already have an external USB/Firewire Sony DVD burner but I can't find any program that will do what I want and manually editing is just too much work I can't find the time to do.
Again, thank you for the reply.

  7. If you want dates, simply edit the title to reflect the date on the disk. Create a new title for each date.

The only one that I saw or was reading that does tis is Philips. To be exact one that I saw was model DVDR 75/17. It recorded date/time from MiniDV camcorder as subtitle that can be turned on and off.

I will start looking for the Philips than. Thank you very much.
I think this is the one that write only to the "+", right?

PS. If the 210 and the 310 are basically the same, than this one will not record date and time from the DV tape. I got this information from the user manual of the 310 downloaded from PioneerElectronics site.

This might be a pain in the butt for me because on a 60 minutes tape, I may have 300 starts and stops and the whole tape was recorded over a period of 2 weeks to 8 months. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Sorry my post wasn't very productive. I wonder if the 320 Pioneer does what you are wanting?

  13. I opened up the top cover to get a closer look how the Pioneer DVD recorders are made. The Pioneer DVR-210, DVR-310, and DVR-510 use the Pioneer DVR-A106 DVD burner, from computers, installed in their DVD recorders. The drive is Made in China, not Japan. It looks and sounds reliable. I assume that the new Pioneer DVR-220, DVR-225, DVR-320, DVR-420, and DVR-520 use the next version, the DVR-A107 that is found in computers. Some of the Pioneer DVR-220s are Made in Japan, and I doubt that the DVR-A107 drives are Made in Japan. I believe that the only Made in Japan part in these Made in China Pioneer DVD video recorders is the video chip board. Since I opened up the top cover of my Pioneer DVR-210, it looks like that I need to go back to Costco and exchange it for the same model.

All the computer DVD writers from Pioneer are made in China for years. So far nobody used a x8 drive like A107 for recorder. They all used the x4 drive. It is good to have a standard writer inside. In case it fail you can replace it. The newer Pioneer 220 (225) and JVC DR-M1S do not have a standard IDE connector. You have to kiss them goodbye when the drive fail after warranty expired.

No matter which type of drive they're using once they fail you won't be able to replace it, their firmware is totally different and is not readily available like PC based drives.

I know the recorder firmware only recognize certain kinds of drives. Tjmobile did a experiment. He replaced the drive in LiteOn 5001 with regular LiteOn 411 and it worked. Of course it would not recognize a NEC ND-1300. Somebody may try to replace the drive in Pioneer 310 with a regular Pioneer 106 drive and see what happens.

  17. This is true. The LiteOn 5001 has a LiteOn 401s (which was FW upgraded at the factory to a 411s). My PC's 411 drive works exactly as the original. My Pioneer 220-S drive does not have an IDE interface, only a ribbon cable coming out of it. I guess when it dies, I will send it to Pioneer, or else simply order the Pioneer part. That is something we have discovered, is the Pioneer website has a parts department which stocks replacement parts for the 220.

I have the Hard drive model of Dish 510, so my Pioneer doesn't get daily use anyhow. Not too worried about that one. I will replace the Pioneer with the Hi-Def recorders when they come out, even if the pioneer is still working.

  18. So far, I am not totally impressed with my Pioneer DVR-210 in terms of fit and finish quality. I barely get any enjoyment out from it. I have the one with the record button that is about to be broken off and the AC outlet that is not aligned correctly at the back of the unit. This is my second exchange, and now this is going to be my third exchange of the same model from Costco. If my next one still sucks, I'm not buying a DVD recorder. I am extremely disappointed with the fit and finish quality control in the Pioneer facility at China. Heck, even Funai China and LiteOn Taiwan have a better fit and finish quality than Pioneer China. I wonder if the Pioneer DVR-510H also has this same problem. A high-dollar item with a poor fit and finish quality control from Pioneer China will not make me buy any Made in China Pioneer products again. I wish it was Made in Japan, so I don't have to go through this hassle. There is the Pioneer DVR-810H I like very much, but it's $800. God, that one is really well-made.

Since you appear to be so terribly concerned with your machine being "made in Japan", what about calling Crutchfield and asking a sales rep if they can send you a "made in Japan" JVC M10S? You already know that the machines manufactured in April of 2004 were made in Japan so you can inform the rep. I'll bet Crutchfield would be willing to honor that request if they still have the April 2004 units in stock (which they probably do).

EDIT: FWIW, I have a Pioneer A07 DVD writer. It was made in China. It is nothing short of terrific in terms of build quality and performance.

  20. I recently played with this recorder recording a laserdisc movie using dvd-r and my question is since it has default auto chapters every 10 minutes, why would there be only 1 thumbnail in the disc navigator after recording? Isn't this supposed to be where you can changed the titles that will appear on the menu after you finalized it?
