  1. My mates PC has suffered a nasty attack from what he tells me is the Chernobyl virus. His machine now fails to complete a chkdsk upon startup and he has a stack load of corrupted files and folders that just won't delete. On top of that the Master Boot Record has been damaged.

If I offer to go round and take a look will I soon be upto my armpits in PC related sh!t ? Or shall I tell him to take it down to PCWorld ?

Buddha says that, while he may show you the way, only you can truly save yourself, proving once and for all that he's a lazy, fat bastard.

  2. Have you tried booting in SAFEMODE/COMMAND PROMPT and running FDISK /MBR ? That should fix a Boot Record issue.

Also -- you may want to goto Norton (Symantec) and see what the extent of damage caused by Chernobyl is and any processes to recover.

Mmm, FDISK the MBR. That's old-school geek talk

Other option is running disk first aid by booting from the OS installation disc. I can't recall the steps for this though I think it prompts you on screen. I had to do it a few months ago after a failed attempt at dual-booting Linux.
