  1. I can't open a *.vdr file. I get this - file unsupported or can not open or is not supported - message
I've tried this Try first to change the directshow codec reader priority settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and increase the priority to 2 or to the top of the plugin-list and try reopen the video.
If that does not help be sure that you have installed DivX or XviD or MPG2 or DV Codecs, read here how to identify what codecs you need.
as suggested in the Common problems and Tips for TMPGEnc.

If I play the file in VirtualDub, Winamp, RealPlayer it's OK

    Anyone??? TIA

  3. I'm trying to add subtitles with VirtualDub as frameserver and TMPGEnc as I've done many times before. I think I've got all the codec, since I can see the movie.

G2spot says all codec are installed, and if I open the *.avi file in TMPGEnc instead of the *.vdr file, I can preview the *.avi file in TMPGEnc.

Try a simple script in avisynth
    AviSource("c:\folder\myclip.avi")
If it opens in mplayer2 it will serve to tmpgenc too. Use Trumans avisynth subtitler here's a good guide.
