Just wanted to throw this out there:

If anyone is contemplating converting their 451s to an 851s via firmware, contemplate no longer. I just did the change yesterday... it kicks ass. Now, I know most people in here will probably say that it's not right that I did this or that I am advocating this, but to each his own. I am simply stating that if you had any worries about this change, don't worry. I set this up yesterday and I can burn 4x arita dvd+r's at 8x flawlessly.

    Go ahead, dive in.

    Later.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it. What if you put a turbo on your car to make it go faster. Does that mean you should give some more money to the car manufacturer?

I totally agree, just being careful. I expected someone to jump on me right away to deter this...

    I've had my 411s @ 811s for about 100 burns now of 4x media @ 8x media.
Really, the only thing that we don't know about is the long term effects but hopefully my 79.99 411 after MIR at BestBuy will last long enough to carry me in to the dual layer era.
It could be that the laser wattage, etc., and every thing else in the 411-451's are exactly the same as the 811-851's and they will last for a long time. It was a chance I was willing to take and am glad I did, at least for now.
Now, if you really want to see people flame, just mention that after you overclocked your 451 to 851 it went lights out and you are returning it to the store !! That will get the juices flowing in here LOL.

And where is the firmware upgrade posted for this?

    I have 1 811, 1 411, would like to up the 411.

No difference here than LiteOn's own continual firmware updates. Best company out there for firmware updates, since their CD updates..

    Cheers,

    George

It is more than a firmware update, it requires updating the EEPROM also.

    Find it here : http://www.speedlabs.org/

DO NOT CLICK ON SHORTCUT or it may take you to Lite-On.
You should TYPE the web address in.
All the instructions and tools are in the "kit".

Now, how the hell did they kidnap the link you provided? I clicked, went to multiple LiteOns.

    Sheesh.

Off to type in the URL, see what that does. Probably more than I want to do, my 411 does well, will probably migrate it down to one of the kids if I decide I need to replace it.

    Cheers,

    George

They (Lite-On) actually had nothing to do with it. The guy who runs the Speedlabs site didn't want anyone hotlinking his files so if you try to access from another site's shortcut you go to Lite-On.

think this file will only do 411 to 811 ...
    not 451 to 851.

    for 451 to 851 you need LDW851FP.EXE or GS08_Mod_V2.EXE

  10. if you do the 451 to 851 hack with GSOA firmware then you can use bitsetting to write your dvd+r as dvd rom ...then they will be readable by any set top box or PS2.

    GSO8 will not allow bitsetting.

(you will need to run LDW851FP.EXE on the GSOA firmware before you flash!!!)

My response was in response to THIS question from gmatov. He wasn't interested in the 451 to 851, just the 411 to 811 which does take more than just a firmware update.

  16. Did the 411@811 conversion and have never looked back. Newegg sells the Arita 4x +R media for $92 shipped and these burn at 8x no problem with great scans.

Have burned well over 100 discs at 8x with no issues at all.

  17. Thanks Tommy for posting your scans. I'm impressed. I think they're as good or better than standard 811S scans. I've been thinking about buying a used 411S on eBay and converting it until the dual layer burners come out and their bugs are worked out. And , I'll be able to scan with Kprobe and do bitsetting too, I believe. Currently I'm using a Pioneed A04.

  20. Tommy,

I've been very curious about A04 scans, 'cause I'd never seen one. Hmmm, very interesting. Guess time for it to hit eBay.

This is the "Polish Mod" site and the files there are not the same or as safe as Zebra's mod. I would'nt use this site.

  23. New firmware GS0C FOR 851S. : http://64.71.171.185/~dhc014/indexOEM.htm#LDW-851S

GS0C does bitsetting and seems for me to give better results with Ricoh DVD+R. (Can now burn Ricoh DVD+R @ 8x).

If you are running 451S@851S PLEASE to run LDW851FP.EXE on the GSOC executable...or you may be very sorry Also remember to be sure and not flash the wrong drive)!
