  1. Now that I'm able to capture video, here comes the second round of questions.

    I'm using virtualvcr 2.6.9.6252

Is there any way to make virtualvcr remember the settings?

I've done several captures, some looked ok, some didn't. Playing around with the settings in virtualvcr I've noticed some funny things. I'm capturing audio just fine so I'll skip that.

    video tab - defaults

    fame size - 320x240
    color format - rgb24
    frame rate - 25

"use custom settings" is not checked
    "use compression" is not checked

    The funny stuff:

I noticed if I change color format to UYVY, RGB24 no longer appears in the drop down box (until I close virtualvcr and restart the program).

I checked "use custom settings", changed the frame rate to 352x480 (per another thread I read), clicked OK and it said it couldn't do it. (I can't remember exactly what the error said) So then I tried again and it worked Only problem is, the captured video looked crappy. It was real tall and narrow.

Also, all this time I've been playing around with capturing, all of the previews and captured files have been black and white. Now suddenly wehn I changed the UYVY and RGB24 setting, everything is color now

What gives? Is virtualvcr flakey or what?

Can someone explain (or point me to a good thread) the proper settings in virtualvcr for what I'm trying to do?

I've attached a picture of my settings for VirtualVCR. I would definitely use the custom settings. You also need to decide what resolution you want to use. If you want to burn the capture to DVD, you should use a half D1 resolution (352x480). I capture at 368x480 because of some peculiarities with my capture card, but I also crop it down to 352x480 as I'm capturing using VirtualVCR's video cropping filter.

If you just want to save the capture for viewing on your computer, you could chose whatever resolution you like, but note that VHS is not a high resolution medium. Anything higher than half D1 is pretty much a waste space.

You can save your settings by clicking on the icon that looks like a floppy disk after you have everything set the way you want it.

  3. Thanks for replying BrainStorm69,

Ok, I shoulda figured out that save thing

That YUY2 isn't an option for me, neither is the huffyuv. Must be missing something?

YUY2 should be an option in your "colour format" drop down. Notice that it is a drop down with a scroll bar. Not all of the options show when you click the down arrow, but you should be able to scroll through all the options with the scroll bar once you click on the down arrow. If you want, you can use the rgb24 color format instead.

Huffy will become an option if you download and install the huffy codec. It is a nearly lossless codec that will capture to an avi. But note you will need a LARGE hard drive with lots of space to capture using this codec. Aproximately half a gig per minute.

    You can download it here:

    On AV Sync tab:

Be sure the "Resample Audio" box is checked, and the "Resample audio dynamically" radio button is ticked.

The colour format doesn't have a scroll bar in the drop down on mine. There are only two options, RGB24 and UYVY. RGB24 is the default and if I select UYVY, then go back to the drop down, RGB24 no longer appears in the drop down....I swear Maybe I should download and reinstall.

    Thanks, I'll download it.

My ultimate goal is to capture about three or four VHS tapes and burn to DVD. When I have them on DVD, I can easily copy that DVD or record to VHS tape, whichever format the family member wants. I would like to get the highest quality capture and burn I possibly can.

  8. And you might want to check out that "amazing discovery..." post too. I've been capturing 368x480 and cropping on the fly....

    Will do

One more question, my primary HDD is on a RAID array (mirror). Will this have any effect on the capture. I also have an 80gb HDD (standalone). Should I be saving files to the 80gb?
