Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

Its a cheap way of trying to cram as much video onto cd/dvd as possible with uber low bitrates that would shame even scrooge.

  5. There is this guy who calls himsel kwag. At one time he was a regular on these forums. He uses Tmpgenc with highly modified GOP settings, quantize matrices and other settings to attempt to expand the bounds of VCD, SVCD and DVD in terms of keeping quality whilst increasing the possible playing time within a given media size. He calls all these settings K(S)VCD or KDVD. He had some criticism of his methods due mainly to claiming KVCD etc as a 'standard'. He didn't take the critcism well and he fell out with dvdrhelp.com and retreated to his own website.

His site is www.kvcd.net. Take a look and make up your own mind.

Personally, I have tried his templates (well, a couple anyway) and was not impressed with the final quality, though the filesize was small.

About KVCD: Actually the templates alone don't do much. You need to use some avisynth scripts and do audio with HeadAC3he. And results can be good, at least to my eyes. But of course, each person experience quality in a different way... And of course, they are nonstandard VCDs/SVCDs. But the main difference between any XVCD and KVCD is that KVCD has quality in mind, not only squeezing as much footage as possible.

Now KDVDs are a whole different story. It's fully standard DVDs, but with some parameters optimized. I create them a lot, and I can say that I am very happy with the quality.

If you want to do 1-CD movies or if you want to get more footage on your DVD Media, and you have some time to spare learning and having fun, then I believe KVCD.NET is the way.

  7. As above.

K*** refers to the encoding methods developed by former member kwag.

Is he really an ex-member? Did he resign, get fired or just hasn't posted in a while?

In my vcd days, I had reasonable success with his templates because my players are pretty tolerant of non standard settings (except framerate). I was very glad to have something to test the limits of (x)vcd creation. I don't know kwag personally but he wasn't the only one who had novel idea's at the time.
I also tried templates made by others. I haven't checked lately but I think some templates are still in the tools section.
I recall a number of posts and enjoyed the technical discussions but some members were downright rude when they couldn't achieve expected results similar to the clips he provided to prove his point.
In addition to gop settings. lot's of tricks are used like smoothing filters, ntsc 23.97 instead of 29.97 framerate and not using full screen settings to minimize filesize.
As was said the best thing is to check out his site and see for yourself.

  9. Old news.

This gets back to the many standards arguments that were fun three+ years ago. They began with VCD standards and the proposition that you should only abide by VCD standards and only purchace a VCD player. As opposed to the many DVD players that wre coming out that could play VCD discs.

Hello Aunt Mable. Time marches on.

kwag's last post to my memory was him vowing never to post here again... and that was a long time ago. It is a self-imposed exile.

A lot of the arguments that various members had with kwag was how he originally promoted his encoding methods (initially TMPGEnc templates) as new "standards" or a new "format" (e.g., does anybody else remember when Apex was "apparently" going to official support "KVCD" ). Not only was this downright misleading, but it also lead to a lot of confused newbies.

Many of kwag's current encoding methods/techniques are excellent though their "history" of development has left a bad impression to many members who remember that time.
