  1. I've been looking all over this forum for info on burning DVD's with windows 98 SE but I don't know if I'm searching for the wrong things or what? I can backup my PS2 games on the fly but I can't backup my retail DVD movies.
I have DVDdecrypter, DVD shrink, and RecordNow DX.
I have more than enough free hard drive space available (40+ gig free) and I have a fairly new computer (AMD XP 2100 W/ 512 meg memory)
Is there something else I need, am I doing something wrong.
I really want to stick with 98 SE if I can.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm getting so frustrated I'm ready to get DVD Xcopy Xpress and I'm still not sure how that will work either.

    Thank you

RecordMax may be your problem. I stopped using it when I discovered that it modify's the ifo files in the created directory. Try Nero 6 or the freeware Deep Burner. Deep Burner is a small download and works quite well,it's available in the tools section on the left <

I use WIN98SE (soon to be WIN2000 PRO)and have no problems burning with my Plextor 708A. Try using NERO burn or IMG TOOL BURN. Here is the download for IMG TOOL BURN:

If you insist on using win98SE, dunno why, I still have it on my dual boot system just in case of a major problem so I can get access to WinXP, but thats it ........

    Anyway :

You cannot get ANY filesize bigger than 4GB with Win98SE, as it supports the FAT32 filesystem, and that is the limit of the filesystem, hence NTFS

That may be you're problem, the filesystem won't let you create filesizes bigger than 4GB, which can be a problem if you intend to copy/backup/create dvd's

If you see my profile I probably have the wimpy-est computer(or Close to it) on the forum. I have first Win 98 and use the A06. I have not had any problems yet. (Knock Knock) So I wouldn't condemn the system. I know little so have no other suggestions other than this. Just know that Windows 98 works fine. I did have problems after a reformat and install that went bad. I reformatted a second time- properly and everything has been fine since. Good luck.

  8. I am a happy DVD burner using Win98SE. AMD750 with HP300i burner.
Many software packages (Decrypter, Shrink Imgtool etc etc) break a large DVD vob into 1GB or other size segments to avoid the 4GB max file size problem of the Win95/98 file system.
This should not be an issue for copying DVDs.
If your hard disk is defragged and your system is fast enough to keep up the data rate needed for DVD burning win98SE is a very stable platform.

  11. bornfree,

what exactly seems to be the problem. Are you getting any error messages? More details pls then mayhap we can help.

    (edit - deleted)

Ripping with 98 is no big deal, many do it and it is faster than 2k or XP as well!!

ps: I assembled my own PC as well.

I burn ISO all the time. I use DVDDECRYPTER to burn ISO and don't have any problems or errors. I don't know why you're saying using WIN98 you cannot burn ISO's. Unless I'm misunderstanding your post.

  13. It's like the old saying, "Intel giveth, Microsoft taketh away." lol..

That's true because Windows 98se will run alot faster on a newer system than any of the newer Operating Systems simply because it doesn't do as much so it doesn't hog the memory up as bad. But really the only reason to upgrade for me is when I buy a new computer. I normally never have to install a new OS before I need a new computer anyway.. lol Computers get old quick...

    You are right
Thinking of AVI's and the 4 meg barrier somehow got convoluted
into ISO's - me no think straight..

@ SirRipper: I even miss Win 95c. That was the best PC o/s apart from the BSOD issue.

Why do you want to stay with win 98 se? It is so buggy and unstable, I would go with 2000 or xp and you will probably get rid of most of your problems. Plus Fat32 won't support files over 4 gigs thats probably it as steptoe said.

I use Nero Express 5.5.10.31 that came with my Aopen DRW4410 (bitsetting), ASPI 4.60 (1021), DVDDecrypter, DVD2One with Win 98/SE in 98lite Sleek mode (95 Shell, no MS HTML, no I/E, no O/E, etc...) and I get 99%+ Burn satisfaction. No O/S crashes, very stable just don't have NTFS.

Your problem may be Media problem use DVDinfoPro and check it against this list here http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm or maybe your burner sucks, check the reviews on this site.

PS: I buried Windows XP in the backyard where no one would find it.

    Windows 98/SE tip:
Go to device tree and look at driver file details and observe that most devices like mouse will have something like VMM32.VXD (vmouse.vxd), this shows that Windows is using a generic driver rather than the correct one in ().
To get rid of VMM32.VXD generic drivers:
Copy the following drivers to both these directories:
    c:\windows\system\
    c:\windows\system\vmm32\

Extract from Win 98/SE disk Cab 53 configmg.vxd
    Extract from Win 98/SE disk Cab 54 ntkern.vxd, vcomm.vxd, vdd.vxd, vdmad.vxd, vflatd.vxd and vmouse.vxd.

    Reboot.

This will eliminate using VMM32.VXD generics. Fewer blue screens etc...

This applies to Windows 98 and Windows ME, the files need to be extracted from different cab's.

Make sure the programs you're using are fully compatible with Windows 98 SE. I used to run XP but returned to 98SE after having to rebuild a system also. Many of the programs I was running under XP "appear" to also run under 98 but crash before I can get any real work done. Tore my hair out until I realized that I was running programs designed for XP.

With respect to the opinions of others, there is little unstable or buggy in 98SE on a properly built and configured system with quality hardware inside it. But then you probably already know that if you've built it yourself.

PET PEEVE: When bashing any OS, specific examples need to be supplied for the opinion to be relevant.

  18. I am running Windows 98 and I am also having trouble with backups. My external HD wont even work on that machine. Is there anywhere online to update to 98SE or higher? TIA

  19. If you are going to use WIN98SE (I do) with FAT32, you need DAEMON TOOLS to use it.

    1) DvdDecrypter to read image to create ISO files (It will create and .mds file and some .is<x> files. Remove original dvd after ripping!
    2) Mount a virtual disk using DAEMON TOOLS.
    3) Start DVD Shrink. Open disk created with Daemon Tools.
    4) Set compression to CUSTOM Ratio. Adjust bar/compression until the TOP green bar says UNDER 4GB!!!!!!. It will not work over that.
    5) Use "Backup". It will say it will launch dvddecrpter to write, so put in a blank dvd.

    This works for me.
