  1. I have a few store bought VHS tapes that I want to backup to DVD
before the kids break them like they did the others. My ati AIW 9600
pro will not work because of macrovision protection. Tried the hacks
to no avail. I read if you run the vhs through a digital cam like a sony
first the capture will work. My question is will any sony cam work or
    only certain models. Thanks.

  2. Well I bought the video tapes at the store. Some were 20 dollars
each and aren't on DVD. I just don't want them to get runied. The
kids love to watch them but sometimes don't take care of them.
DVD's would be more durable I think. I have a sima ColorCorrector
Pro and if I make a copy of the tape through it and try to import the
new tape into my AIW 9600 pro I still get the macrovision shutdown.
Thanks for the reply. I thought it was OK to backup your own tapes.

It is legal to backup your own tapes. At the same time, it is illegal to circumvent Macrovision. Macrovision can blow me, I get around it anyway. I don't think anyone will ever come after you for backing up your own VHS even if you do bypass the Macrovision. The first thing they'd have to do is find a way into your house to prove you were doing something wrong. I have no doubts that somewhere, at some time, someone has been prosecuted for making an illegal copy, but I bet it doesn't happen often. Just like people who rip off satelite TV. They never get busted. The only time I ever heard of someone getting in trouble for that was O.J. Simpson, and he only got busted because they wanted something to bust him for......he's pissed off the cops one too many times.

  4. I have been backing up my kids DVD's on VHS! They scratch and smudge the DVD's and I have found VHS to be much more durable. Also they don't have to mess with menus to play the movie. They don't care about quality but rewinding is a pain.
